Robert Harper Green, Jr., age 65, died on May 26, 2014, at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, GA. He was the son of the late Lucy Vaughan Kruse of Columbus, OH, and the late Robert H. Green, Sr. of Milledgeville, GA. He is survived by his stepfather, Lt. Col. Herbert T. Kruse USAF Retired and sister, Katherine Kruse Wolfe (Grant), of Columbus, OH; his stepmother Janet Green; brother, Walter C. Green, and sisters, Suzanne Green, Sherrie Green Harding, and Nannette Green Allen, of Milledgeville, GA; uncle, Ralph P. Harris of Spartanburg, SC; aunt Betty Ann Kalemjian of Exton, PA; cousins, Valette Adkins, Malinda Green Nesmith, and Mervin Green Graham, of Milledgeville, GA; cousin, Deanie Rector, of Union, SC, and cousin, Kitsy Harris Robertson, of Spartanburg, SC.

Born on May 30, 1948 in Columbia, SC, he graduated from Kecoughtan High School in Hampton, Va., where he starred in a number of theatrical productions. In 1970, he graduated from the University of South Carolina, with a major in broadcast journalism. After graduation, he worked as assistant bureau chief for United Press International in Columbia, SC, where he established a reputation for adept political reporting. He lived and worked in San Francisco, CA from 1978 to 1990, and then returned to his southern roots, settling in Atlanta.

Robert loved to cook, entertain, and was known as a "green thumb" for his beautiful patio garden. Robert will also be remembered for his wicked sense of humor, dramatic flair, and irrepressible personality.

Robert had a deep appreciation for the best of southern culture, including southern cooking and southern hospitality. In the face of adversity, he would often quote Scarlett O'Hara: "After all, tomorrow is another day."

The family would like to thank the nurses at the Davita Buckhead Dialysis Clinic for their care as well as the nurses and staff at Piedmont Hospital who gave such wonderful care to him during the last weeks of his life.

A private memorial service will be held in Columbus, OH at a later date. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com

I remember being in the 1966 production of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". What a good guy and actor Robert was. Different circles we ran in but always fun to be with.

I too remember Bob from Guess Whose Cominbg to Dinner - I also had a couple of classes with Bob at KHS but time has blurred the memory. I remember him as the consumate gentleman with a great laugh. Rest in Peace, my friend.

I worked with Bob on stage, playing the supporting role of Banjo in our senior class play, "The Man Who Came to Dinner." Bob played the lead and was funny and terrific in every way. Bob was fearless on stage and had an incredible sense of humor, timing, and stage prescence. I must say he was one of my inspirations to go on to minor in theater in college, become active in community theater and the high school drama director at Warwick H.S. in Newport News.

I always smile whenever I remember Bob. I can't say I was close to him, his friend, or one of his circle, but I nevertheless admired him, never forgot him, never will. I always wondered about his life, and I'm happy finally to hear that he apparently had one that included success, friends, and happiness.

Throughout school I used my stepfather's surname. I wasn't popular; if you knew me, I was known then as Tom Cline; however, I graduated with my biological father's surname, my legal name, and have used it since, known throughout my adult life as Tom Stroup.

Very fond memories of Bob as Sheridan Whiteside in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and playing along side him as Nurse Preen. He nailed that role and was a wonderful all around guy, smart and funny!  Rest in peace Bob.

I remember being in some plays with Robert. He was a true thespian. He was quite a character and loved the theatre. He is someone I will always remember from my high school days at Kecoughtan.

Bob's humor was intelligent and gracious. Bob "shared" laughter. What a beautiful legacy!
