Charles John Schwartzman - Class Of 1965

Charles John Schwartzman

Note from Betty Branscome Massey, Class of 1965
I am sorry to have to report that Charles Schwartzman class of 1965 is deceased.  He died in Fredericksburg on September 30.  It is really bizarre that I knew him here in Fredericksburg but never realized that he was in my class at KHS until I read his name on the list you sent out.  He was a really nice guy; an officer and a gentleman. He retired as a colonel in the army.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Charles J. Schwartzman died in the care of his loving wife and family in Fredericksburg on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Feb. 15, 1947. A graduate of the College of William and Mary and the United States Defense University, he forged a distinguished military career, spanning more than 27 years.

He was a soldier, educator, historian and national security analyst. Col. Schwartzman held significant positions in the U.S. Army, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the State Department and the Army War College. His assignments ranged from platoon leader in Vietnam to faculty member at the National War College in Washington, D.C., to the command of a 1,000-person mechanized infantry battalion in Germany.

Following his military service, he was a leading member of a team in Zagreb, Croatia, charged with developing a plan to modernize the Croatian Ministry of Defense. He followed this assignment by working for L–3 Communications Corp. and then returned to the State Department for several years.

A distinguished sportsman, Col. Schwartzman spent more than 20 years as a practicing foxhunter with the Casanova Hunt in Warrenton, the Caroline Hunt in Caroline County as well as the Ashland Bassets in Ashland. His organizations included the Army Navy Club, the State Department’s Dacor–Bacon Club and St. George’s Episcopal Church.

Col. Schwartzman is survived by his wife, Carol; his mother, Elizabeth, of Hampton; his children and their spouses, Geoffrey Schwartzman (Erin) of Alexandria and Julia Kerner (Thomas) of Wilmington, N.C.; four grandchildren, Sarah, James, Emily and Anna; and five siblings and their spouses, Janet Shepard (Jim) of Winston–Salem, N.C., Richard Schwartzman (Alicia) of Fredericksburg, Robert Schwartzman (Melissa) of Leavenworth, Kan., Patrice Fiest (Rick) of Charlotte, N.C., and Jon Schwartzman (Ivonne) of Greenville, S.C.; and multiple nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Services, with a reception following, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Oct. 9, at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg.

Memorial donations may be made to St. George’s Episcopal Church.
