Thomas Almer Johnson

Thomas A. Johnson, Jr. passed peacefully on June 9, 2021. Affectionately known as Tommy, Tom, and Woody, he was born on July 29, 1945, in Hampton, Virginia, to Thomas and Mabel Johnson. Tommy graduated from Kecoughtan High School in 1965 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves during the Vietnam War. He worked for Bell Atlantic (now Verizon Communications) for almost 40 years and was a member of the local CWA union. Tommy was also very active in his children’s lives. He spent many years coaching his son’s baseball and football teams at Phoebus Little League and the Fox Hill Athletic Association. He knew no stranger and loved to talk and share a story.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Jane Reynolds Johnson; his son, Bradley Wayne Johnson; his brothers-in-law, Frank Salavarria and Eddie Reynolds; and his parents.

He is survived by his children, Thomas A. Johnson III and Amie Johnson Holman, their spouses, four grandchildren, Kara, Kelly, Jackson, Jane, and two great-granddaughters, Ava and Amelia. Tommy is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Salavarria and Patricia Edwards, his brother-in-law, David Edwards and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 17, 2021 at Parklawn Wood Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the American Red Cross or The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command.
