Below is a letter that Fran Laffin wrote to the South Catholic Community in February 2010.

Dear Friends,

Nearly nineteen years ago, South Catholic High School ceased operations as the only Catholic secondary school in  Hartford. To the dismay of thousands, 215 South St. became home to educational programs sponsored by the City of Hartford. South alums, faculty and friends became "homeless". However, even though there is no physical plant to come home to, there is a bond between graduates, faculty/staff and friends who came together throughout the years to make South Catholic a special community that was/is second to none.

Consequently, the idea was born last fall to hold the First Ever South Catholic High reunion. This event will be held on May 22, 2010 at Northwest Catholic High School. This is not a fundraiser or development function but a goodwill initiative that was fully embraced by the Northwest Catholic community when I approached them. While we have no budget for this gathering, THE REUNION IS FREE OF CHARGE. We are able to do this through the tremendous volunteer work of the Reunion committee (organizational functions), the generosity of alumni business people in the area (food and beverages) and the support of Northwest Catholic (free use of their facilities). NWC's agreement to provide their facility is in the interest of community-building; many children of alumni attend Northwest Catholic and several alumni, such as myself, teach there. While there have been many class reunions throughout the years, this is the first ever attempt to provide a venue that will allow alumni from all classes, faculty, staff and friends of South Catholic to reconnect with each other after so many years.

This is a celebration not of a building on South St. but of people who fashioned a unique spirit that will live on for many years to come.

Hope to see you on May 22nd!

Sincerely,
Fran Laffin
(class of '70, teacher '77-86)

Thanks to all the organizers and Fran Laffin for the wonderful SCHS Reunion!  It was a joy to learn that my students and those I didn't get the opportunity to teach went on to lead productive, fascinating, and successful lives.  Some are even ahead of me on the retirement ladder which kind of blew my mind!  I'm grateful for all the things I learned from my students and fellow faculty members.  South was my first and happiest ever job and I count myself lucky to have been included in the South 'family' of terrific people.  If any of you get to Castine, Maine and need a place to stay, just email me and we'll get the guest room ready.  Laurie (Pisch) Stone

He was a 1971 graduate of South Catholic High school and a graduate of Bryant College. Tom had lived in Westbrook, Old Lyme, and Lusby, Maryland before moving to Alabama 3 years ago. He was a Hartford County Deputy Sheriff, and a US Postal employee, retiring as a Postal Inspector. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. James Colangelo. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the reunion.  Looking forward to future gatherings.

I wanted to write to inform classmates that March 2010 I was shocked to read an obituary for Kelley McGarvey (Adams). You may remember her twin John; he wrote the most amazing entry in her online obituary. They were extremely close. Kelley and her husband Joel had three children.

If anyone knows an email address for Lavinia Barry, I would appreciate it if you could send it to my email lindenov@yahoo.com. Otherwise, does anyone know how to contact her?

Dear Fellow Rebels:

Now that summer is quickly coming to a close, it's time to start planning to join your fellow classmates, faculty and friends at the 50th Anniversary Celebration on October 7th at the Aqua Turf.  Believe it or not, it's only 46 days away!

The committee has worked hard all summer planning for this special evening and so far we have received a tremendous response - it's going to be a huge event! There is SO much excitement surrounding this celebration - especially from the faculty!

The Aqua Turf is a beautiful setting with great food, we have a dynamite band, an exciting variety of items for a Tea Cup Auction, SCHS memorabilia, and a few surprises as well.   Although this is not a sit down dinner, tables will be arranged by year of graduation - providing everyone with an opportunity to reacquaint with fellow classmates!

Friends, this is the 50th Anniversary Celebration and there will not be another event like this for another 5 - 10 years.  Contact your classmates, friends and family and plan to be part of a very special evening. Come join in the fun!

Please note that the deadline to purchase tickets is September 15th and tickets cannot be purchased at the door ... so don't wait any longer!
A PDF of the 50th Anniversary RSVP, which can be printed off and mailed in with your check, is located at the ClassCreator website homepage https://www.classcreator.com/Hartford-CT-South-Catholic-1965-1991/class_index.cfm or can send your email address to the Committee and request that a copy of the RSVP be emailed to you. The Reunion Committee’s email address is SouthCatholicReunion@gmail.com . Any questions can also be directed to the email address above.

A special MASS will also be celebrated by the Rev. Henry Frascadore, former principal of South Catholic at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 9 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford.

Additional information about the weekend’s events will be posted on the Class Creator site using the User Forum feature, so check in at the site for updates. You can also check the User Forum for “CLASS CHATTER”, a special place for members of your class to be chatty and reconnect.

As of today, we have, 1,253 Rebels registered at the website. If you know someone who hasn’t registered, please spread the word about the website and the 50th Anniversary Celebration on October 7th!

Something else you might want to consider attending is the 6TH ANNUAL JOSEPH F. REILLY MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT on Saturday, September 17, 2011. Visit the ClassCreator site and click on “Golf Tournament” for more information on this event, which is open to all members of the SCHS community.

The Camino de Santiago does have many paths. The most popular and the one identified in the movie "The Way" is the Camino Frances. It starts in St Jean Pied de Port in France and ends in Santiago de Campostela in Spain. It is a 480 mile journey across some of the most beautiful land in Spain. And yes it takes 4-6 weeks or so for most people  to walk it.  It is a well traveled route with refugios ( traveler hostels) every 5 -10 miles or so. There may only be 1,000 Americans who walk it each year.

I will be leaving in May 2012 for those who are interested in learning more.
