I can't believe it. Folks we're just too young for this. Anway, Steve grew up on the street behind ours up in the Hayward Hills. Rode the same bus to school. Always an easy going guy. Never had problems with him. Funny how with some kids you always have problems, not any with Steve. Was up in that area just last year, everything has changed. Safe journeys Steve.

Wow, so sorry to hear this!  My heart sunk.  We are too young!  Steve and I had a life changing experience in February, 1968.  We met JIMI HENDRIX together at Winterland Ballroom.  Between sets, JIMI was hanging out in the wide hallways that go up to the 2nd tier.  We were unsure if it was him, but Steve had a bag of popcorn and we went over to say hello.  He shared our popcorn and talked, and said his first song of the next set would be RED HOUSE.  When he left, we scurried down to try to get up to the stage.  Sure as heck he came out blasting "There's a red house over yonder, and that's where my baby stayed .... "(that was from my memory, so words could be slightly off.)   I saw him at a store about 1982 and he wanted me to come and tell his friends that we had met HENDRIX together.  So, to any friends that may have heard his story, he was telling the truth.  We did meet HENDRIX and what an experience.  REST IN PEACE my buddy.

That was a good story, Doreen McMillen!  Glad to hear that you and Steve shared an exciting experience like that.  You and Alan are both right: 65 is way too young to be dying!  Now, as our age number increases, so does my belief of when "Old Age" starts.....and now I think 80 is middle age!   Stay Healthy all of you Class of 1970!  RIP  Dear Steve!

I really liked your story Doreen it was so our generation. I didn't know Sreve but he sounded like a real nice guy. I wish we had met in high school. May you rest in perfect peace, Steve.

Peace,

Joe

Hi Steve, So sorry to hear about you moving on in life. Some memories of you.

I knew Steve in high school. After graduation did not see or hear from you. I was in Santa Cruz and met you in some club in Capitola around 1978. We went to the beach together and chatted. You had just filed your patent for the Watersaucer and had that lime green plastic surfboard shaped by Mike Diffenderfer,  with the watersaucer logo on it.

You were so proud of it. The only issue was that it kept delaminating and you were busy trying to figure out how to fix it. It sat in my house for the longest time.

Rest in peace my friend.

Cherri

May you now play play your guitar riffs for the angels. Oh I forgot. You were always filled with passion for life and the finer indulgents that went along wit it. Passion for surfing, music, helping people,Val's burgers and friends.

Bye Cute surfer boy!!

Steve Hartley  and I first met in 8th grade when we both attended Bancroft Junior HIgh. He was so cute and friendly with his side-swept surfer hair and madras plaid shirts--I was smitten. However, I was extremely shy and could never approach hime.  He could tell this and would always go out of his way to talk to me at lunch and say "HI" and kid around with me in the hallways. Soon we were going "steady"--we were boyfriend and girlfriend, but at that age that simply meant we talked on the phone and he held my hand when he walked me to the bus after school--nothing more. We were so innocent, and he always made me smile by being so kind, funny and attentive to this quiet girl.

I was heartbroken when he had to move to Hayward (I think his parents divorced)to live with his dad. Later, in the middle of 9th grade, I moved to Hayward and attended Hayward HIgh also. I was happy to see Steve's smiling face there and we picked up where we left off at Bancroft--sorta. I was living on Second St. near HHS in an apartment and he lived way up the hill near CalState, I believe. He would ride his bike down the hill and then walk me to the movies downtown Hayward.  I'll never forget those sweet moments...

He called me a few years ago when I lived in Las Vegas, but I was working as a flight attendant for the DoD and was in Kuwait at the time. He was rambling and apologetic for calling me while I was working, but he just wanted to reminisce and I didn't have the time right then. I wish I had taken the time to reconnect later on...

I was living in Capitola when he passed in Santa Cruz, and had I known he was so close, I would've visited him. He had a sweet soul and and innocence that was very charming--I thought of him many times over the years .  I'm pretty sure he's in heaven surfing, skimboarding, hanging out and just making every soul around him feels special with that cute smile.  Aloha, my friend, until we meet again.
