Occupation: Reading Specialist - Early Literacy Education
Children: Grant Boeringa (October 1, 1988) just finished his Junior year at Washington State University in Pullman. More… He has been accepted to participate in the fall in a Global Alliance Program with a university in Prague, Czech Republic. He is a political science and history major with a journalism and anthropolgy minor. What a wonderful opportunity this is for him. He even has the opportunity to shadow a member of the Czech parliament while he is studying there. His dream (right now) is to become a professor and live the life of academia.

(Catherine) Hope Boeringa (April 18, 1991) just finished her Freshman year at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville majoring in musical theatre and vocal performance. I was able to visit her at the end of April to see her perform Beethoven's 9th (in German) with the Philharmonic in Evansville. Can't wait to see her again!

I am bursting with pride seeing what wonderful adults they are becoming! I sure miss being around them on a day-to-day basis, but I supposed they are stretching the wings that we strive to give our children...

Oh yeah! The new addition to my family (besides my new husband, John!) is a tuxedo kitty named Gypsy that "adopted" us by hanging out at our house for WEEKS until we relented and let him in. Lo and behold! No one is allergic to him! We also have rescued our 4th Bernese Mountain dog, Grendel. He came to us via the Bernese Club in Maryland. He is our great big gentle giant!

Hubby John has been re-elected to his position as Chairman of the Board of Selectmen for the town (his 10th or 11th year now.) He claims this will be his last term, but he has been saying that for quite a few years now! It's fine by me...he is an upstanding man and has made wonderful improvements in our pleasant little town. What a terrific feeling it is to be married to such a well-respected man! Living proof that not all politicians are sleazy...he cares and makes a difference!
Comments:

I loved my high school years with all of my friends...the football games and Shakey's afterwards, pompons, basketball games, the disco at St. Elijah's, going to The Art, West Beach, bike riding all over Lake and Porter Counties with Bridget, Dairy Queen, Luigi's for lunch in Jr. High, playing (ahem) "beauty shop" with Cheri, walking just about everywhere we had to go, Junior Miss...I could go on and on. Very happy years with very happy memories!

One of the wicked memories I have would be driving around with Adriane Rujevcan, Sherri Anderson and Kim Govert - cruising Broadway and then going to the Liquor Bucket in Merrillville to get Boone's Farm Tickle Pink (Adri could buy it). We then bought oyster crackers and M&M's, mixed them (!) and enjoyed them thoroughly with our fine refreshments!! Afterwards, we went to Andrean High School and yelled obnoxious things at the residences of the nuns (terrible, I know!) until all of the lights started coming on in the darkened buildings. We hightailed it out of there, laughing our heads off!

School Story:

I received my Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts with an Elementary Education emphasis from Purdue - West Lafayette. When I moved back from Maui, I received my Reading Specialist endorsement from Purdue Cal and started working at the Portage Township Schools. I've just "retired" after 11 years in Portage due to my move to New Hampshire. I hope to find a similar position in my new home, but I'm not looking just yet! I've worked on my Master's degree in a piecemeal fashion over the years. Maybe now that I have an "empty nest" (sob!) I will seriously work on that degree.

News flash!! As of February, I am once again working as a reading specialist on a Title I grant until the end of the school year (the end of JUNE in NH...ugh!!). I am working close to home in a tiny K-6 school - it has only 40 students!! I'm loving everything about the job, except its limited contract. Hopefully this position will lead to another great opportunity.
