Curtis, Clarence Wilson "Curt" 68, passed away peacefully at home in Bend, OR, June 6, of Alzheimer's. Clarence attended Hopkins High School and the U of M, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and earned a BS in Engineering. He retired from a career in the specialty metals industry in 2006. He loved the Lord, gardening, reading, motorcycles and nature. Survived by wife Blythe, sons Andrew (Michelle) and David (Gabrielle), three grandchildren, all of Bend; brother Roland Eugene Curtis of Columbia Falls, MT. Preceded in death by parents Wilson and Helen Curtis. Memorials can be made to the Humane Society of Central Oregon, 61170 SE 27th St., Bend, OR 97702. (autumnfunerals.net)
Before he was my brother-in-law, I remember when Curt had (another) argument with my sister and hit the road in his Studebaker Silver Hawk. Headed for Baker Road; remember how you could get air over one or two of those hills? Apparently he tried, lost control, and left the road sliding sideways into a tree. Sliced the Hawk in half behind the driver's seat but he got out. Picture of the front half made the paper, as I remember. Met him in the hospital later, where we exchanged pleasantries.
His married life was much calmer. He and Blythe married in Los Angeles with no family present, other than an Aunt (Mitzi or Esther) who arranged a quick reception. They spent months circling the US in their van, as young folks did then. Saw them in San Diego, us sleeping on a waterbed before leaving for two years in the Philippines. Caught them again on our way back and they'd moved to Oregon by then. Neither couple had children yet. Later, two boys each. On this and subsequent visits, Curt was pretty quiet but could get animated talking about his gardening or personal talks with the Lord. Some of you may have met his then-recent widow Blythe, who I brought to the first evening of our 50th anniversary of the Class of 64. Mark Donicht and Dave Seal were two who talked with her.
Thanks, Miles. Now that I'm an Oregonian, Curt's old proximity has more meaning. Somewhere in our shop, I have a class photo from 4th grade, Mrs. Hoots, with the two of us sitting cross-legged in the front row. Back then he was Clarence. Even then, his eyes stood out. And if. Clarence became Curt, why didn't Miles become Carl?

Prettiest eyes. Look it up.
