Mr. Denzel J Martindale

OCTOBER 31, 1946 – DECEMBER 3, 2021

D. J. Martindale (Denzel Joseph) passed away the morning of December 3, 2021, at home in Salina Kansas in the company of his beloved cat, Jaymie. He was born in Martinez, California, on October 31, 1946, the eldest son of Arrell Dean Martindale, Sr. and Betty Fern Martindale (Wilkerson) and raised on military bases in Japan, Germany, Colorado, Minnesota, and California. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology from Kansas State University, and moved in 1969 to Martinez, California. DJ worked at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, California until 1996, enjoying the healthy California lifestyle, running 28 miles a week, hiking and camping with friends, and riding his bike. DJ never married but became a “big brother” and surrogate Dad to Michael and Alan Betts whom he considered “his boys.” DJ was a member of the Martinez Church of Christ.

After a series of brain illnesses and recoveries, he moved to Salina, Kansas where his sister, Chris Martindale, assisted him in procuring a home and living independently. Although his walking was impaired, DJ proceeded to swim an aggregate of 500 miles at the Salina YMCA. He attended the Church of Christ in Salina, teaching young children’s Sunday school. As his illnesses progressed in recent years, he was assisted by his niece, Rebecca Blaha, and the staff at Accessible Health Care, enabling him to continue to live independently at Arbor Court Independent Living in Salina. DJ is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Chris Martindale, his nephew Justin Rogers, niece Stephanie Martindale, and his brother-in-law Alancy Price. He is survived by Michael and Alan Betts, siblings Arrell Dean Martindale Jr. and wife Pamela, W. Patrick Martindale and wife Jean, Nicki Lynn Price, Roy Martindale and wife Sandra, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Salina Church of Christ at 1:30 pm on January 15, 2022
