Mel Moy, thanks for the cool phone number exchange website!   Growing up in Lindale Park in the 50/60s, all i every heard of was the 69 Oxford Exchange.  Never heard of the 63 MElrose one.  I am guessing here, that 63 went away when they opened 69?  only guessing... the only ones i remeber from having relatives that lived around Houston, were the UNderwood, JAckson, OVerland and the CApital downtown exchange.

Speaking of the different telephone exchanges, we lived on John Alber close to Barrick Elementary and our telephone number started with HI which stood for Hillcrest.

Hi, all. I've been amazed to read everyone's comments about the Snoop Shop.  I wish I could be more specific about dates, but.... my uncle Bud Smith owned the Snoop Shop when it was located on Tidwell across from the Rainbow Roller Rink.  (Not sure how or when he came to own it.)  When we (my twin sister Sharon Smith and I) were still in school, our Daddy, Herman Smith, opened Herman's Coin Shop on Fulton just off the intersection of Fulton and Tidwell.  When Uncle Bud wanted to retire he sold the Snoop Shop to our Daddy who ran both the hobby shop and coin shop for years.  We're so pleased to hear how you all enjoyed the shop.  Thanks for sharing! Karen Smith

Tell your Dad he sure made a lot of kids (and adults) happy with the hobby shop ~ we loved going in there and getting  our molds and going home to make stuff to paint. My Brother had a coin collection so he probably went in there also.

Again thanks

Judy

Karen I still have a penny and indian head nickle collection that I started from the coins we got at the rink. The booklets and some of the coins were purchase from your dad. I also sold him some coins. I bought my 1909 S VDB from him. Those collections are a treasure I still look through from time to time. Your dad is a part of that memory. Did your uncle live on the Snoop Shop property? Seems like there was a residence with the shop.

The coin shop was always on the Saturday schedule of several family members.  Bet some purchases are still in "hiding".  Interesting how all these 50+ years later these shops and their owners are being remembered.

Another memory is the Christmas Store in Town & Country or was it Memorial City?  Wasn't there one in Westbury Square too?

Back to food.......what was the name of the sea food place that sit on the corner of the ferry landing and the bayou near the San Jacinto Monument.   We'd go out I-10, take the ferry road exit & enjoy the ferry ride.  The sea gulls and salt water & restraunt smells put us in another world for a short time as we waited in line to board the ferry.  The restraunt was on the left coming off the ferry.  San Jacinto Inn was futher down the road.  This place I'm thinking of had great views of the ships & ferries navigating the channel to occupy kids while parents enjoyed a wonderful dinner.   Food was good & not as expensive as San Jacinto Inn.  Not sure if it's still there?   Miss those wonderful sea food restraunts with such delightful smells [smells made food taste better:)].

Delores # 2665 & Tim 2666--Guess I was too eager to get upstairs & eat,  and not looking at the sign:).  I just cannot connect a name to it.  Jimmy Walkers and Monument Inn were famous in the area.  Allens Landing was also mentioned.  I'll do a search & see what comes up.  Delores, I remember several classes with you.  Thanks again.  Marie

Researched the names Jimmy Walker, Allen Landing & Monument Inn.  Mapquest shows Monument Inn in the right location beside the bayou & ferry landing.  The road name has changed from Battleground Rd.  to Independence Parkway.  Interesting history:  Original building opened @ 1974.  In 1990 was sold & 6 months later it burned.  Last time we were in the area it was probably closed from the fire.  Picture of the new building looks very modern compared to the original building.  But as the old saying goes, "thinking of moving back home again after years of being away...you can't pick up where you left off, it will never be the same as you left it.  It will either be better or worse, never the same".  I'll cherish my memories of the original restraunt, it's good food & great views of the busy ship channel.

The restaurant you asked about was Lynchburg Crossing Restaurant. They had the best sea food.

My Mother shopped at the Snoop Shop to get supplies for Cub Scouts (she was a Den Mother).

Also, I remember my Dad taking my to Herman's Coin Shop on Saturday mornings for "Herman's Bid Board."  He had a wall full of coins that you wrote your bid on a slip of paper for the coins you wanted.  Still collecting coins, and was just last week looking at a type coin set that my Dad got for my 12th birthday.

Marie #2668. I remember you well, both at SHHS and at Shell. I worked at Shell Pipeline from August 1959 until March1961, when I quit to begin our family. My office was on the ninth floor of the old Shell building on Texas at Fannin. We "bumped" into each other often during those years. Good to hear from you through this message forum.

Dorothy (Vick) Veale 1967  First time to respond...to 2656 and anyone else on the phone nuimbers. I think Erma 1965 prob'ly has the correct memory.  I graduated in '67 and distinctly remember ME5-9045 becoming OX5-9045. (695-9045).   Other than that I don't remember it changing in over 50 years.  My mom finally moved from the old 2705 Hardwood Lane address in 2001 after Tropical Storm Allison flooded the place....too close to Hall's bayou after they put in small concrete culverts no bigger than those under our driveways to carry all that rain water (and the backwash when they opened the gates at Lake Conroe). Her lights and phone stil worked while we labored to clean up the mess.

It was the San Jacinto Inn from 1918-1987 when it closed.  In 1974 a new restaurant opened called the Monument Inn a little further down the road.  When it burned in 1990, they moved  to the Lynchburg Crossing Restaurant Building, remodeled and are there today. This information was found by googling San Jacinto Inn. BlogChron.com --Fried shrimp with a side of Texas history has a great article about it.

My sister Kathy and I enticed our group to dine there a couple of years ago after visiting the San Jacinto Monument. The memories flooded back and the food was awesome.  Both were a favorite outing when we were children. We did not remember the name being the Monument Inn, but did remember the all you can eat buffet of the San Jacinto Inn.  So glad I found this article to explain why our memories clashed with what we experienced on our return.  Worth the trip!

To: Judy Maxwell, I had an email from Nelda Doss last week. Your post enticed me to reach out to her again.  It's been so long. She is doing well.

I love reading this forum.  Keep posting!

RE: Hillcrest Exchange (HI)

I worked for Western Electric in those days as an installer.  I helped install the communication equipment in the Hillcrest Exchanges.  I believe there were two; 1) Hillcrest 4 and the other was Hillcrest 7.  At various other times I worked in the Walnut, Melrose, and numerous other exchanges in the Houston area.

#2677…………Roger Bradshaw.....I must agree with you...my brain seems to be on vacation.  So many thing people talk about here I had forgotten years ago but most are at least 10 years younger than I.  I love reading the post here because I am reliving the most fun time of my life.  Y'all just keep on refreshing my memory...I am enjoying it.
