Hello Tigers,  I was surprised to find this picture on this site under the Gallery of our Past.  I am not sure who took this picture but it was definitely taken at Burbank Jr. High.  Sheryl Parsons is in the middle and I am on the right side.  The girl on the left looks very familiar but cannot remember her name.  Does anyone on the forum know?

James-Thanks for informing us about Demaree’s passing.  I was proud to know him, not only as a star classmate, but also as Ann and Anson’s older brother.  In 1961, Demaree and running back Kenneth Bolin represented our high school well.  Both were starters on U of H Cougars team that year.  Demaree had a distinguished career there and later went on to be one of the pioneers in the fitness centers industry that started up in the 70’s.

The website for donations to Friends of the Pasadena Animal Shelter doesn’t seem to allow any specification as for whom the donation is made in memory.  That would have been nice.

You're too funny!  Yeah, there were a few kids that drove van's back then, and used as makeshift hippy pads, lol.  I am reminded of those days, when i see that old classic movie, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", and Sean Penn and his buds come falling out of that van, with smoke billowing out, headed into the school dance!   btw Paula,...my sister and her friends went to Elementary with Donnie B. back in the day.  Roosevelt and Hogg Jr. High.  I was recently reminded when i got an old class photo he is in.

Len Wolff (1967)

During my Junior year (65-66) Kenneth Wilbanks kept harrasing this one guy about his hair. I don't remember the student's name, but I do remember his face. I think he was a senior. One morning, waiting in the hall  outside Mrs. Weunche's and Mrs. Anderson's classes for the homeroom bell to ring, this guy was standing there with a couple of his friends. He looked pretty agitated. The guy told them that if Wilbanks confronted him again he was going to punch him out. No sooner than he said that, Willibanks came strolling up and said "Son, I thought I told you to get a haircut." Whereupon, the kid landed a right cross on Willbank's jaw. For everyone present, it was a "Did you see THAT!!!" moment.

I have not postaed on here in years but just could not let what Len Wolff said about Kenneth Wilbanks

go by with telling him that No, that never happened.  I was working at SAM at the time and I am

sure a lot of the guys would have liked to have punched him BUT none ever did.  Wilbanks is dead now and  can't dispute it himelf.

You would be an excellent person to check an old memory I have from SHHS.  The day of the big race fight in the Cafeteria, school year 70/71, (Feb. 5, 1971) )did Willbanks get injured by "the flying oak chairs" in the cafeteria that day?, or maybe punched?  I have always remembered that evening on the TV news, they interviewed Willbanks, and he had a bandage on his head. Am I remembering that correctly?, or do you remember something similar happening?   btw...Shout out to Betty Minzenmayer, was the absolute best!

The riot fights were my senior year and yes I remember very welll the big fight that broke out in the lunch room.....It was terrible,,,,,but I don't remember if Mr. W. was injured in there or not. My Mom and Martha Buchanan's mom listened to the police scanners at home and if they started to dispatch the ploice or the police helicopter to the school they would come get us and take us home. Good thing I was exempt from my finals .....we missed alot our senior year.

I remember that guy. If I remember correctly, he had blonde hair which he combed back during the day (DEP) to sort of get around the haircut thing. I remember he was a tough guy. He took kindly to me because of my hair length. Mr. Wilbanks sent me home from practice for the awards ceremony practice, because my "hair was too long". After a haircut, I returned. Looking back at photos of the time...it was not very long.

Well I definitely do remember some things that happened that big riot day,   The fighting started in

the lunch room and as the kids were running past our door, we quickly shut it and before we

could, a black boy was pushed inside.  He was so scared that he was shaking and we did not

push him back out.

I called the police 2 times and could not understand why they were not getting there quicker.

Thank goodness, noone was seriously hurt or injured.  I am afraid that today that would not 

be true.  There would probably have been some one knived or shot.  Don't remember seeing

Wilbanks after that.  I think we just all went home, didn't we?

The school was closed down for a week after that for talks between parents and 

teachers and counselors.

I didn't finish the year working at SAM.  We  had moved by then to Spring Branch and I worked for

the Sp Branch ISD a long time before retiring.

To the attendance clerk who said Mr Wilbanks never got hit I hate to disagree with you but I was in the hallway just behind a few yards from where it happened.  They guys name was Larry I believe although I do not remember the last name.  Mr Wilbanks grabed him by the shoulder to turn him around and when he turned he landed a fist on Mr Wilbanks.

Not sure on the hitting of Mr. W. BUT I thought when the big fight broke out in the lunch room that some one did get cut with a knife. So some of us have different memories of that time and that day,.

Funny I guess it's like starting a sentence and whispering it to each other in a circle and see what the sentence ends up being.

Our memeory can be good and some one else remembers the situaltiont totally different. My sister and I can talk about different things from the past and we both can remember it a bit different. Our Mom who is 95 (and still has a good memory) is our go to person to verify which or us if either is correct.

In response to Erma Kelso's comments denying my recount of Mr. Wilbanks getting hit by a student, sorry, Sweetheart, it did, indeed, happen. I was ten feet away. So were about a dozen other students. Sounds like Peter Olafson remembered as well.

That's right, Peter. The student who hit Mr. Wilbanks always had that "tough guy" demeanor. Good memory! And you're right about the hair, too. He combed it back in the "Dep" look. Wanyne Newton on steroids!

Fast forward 50yrs, if "Willie" laid a hand on a student now, he would be filed on for assault.

What passed then, for "discipline", would be considered injury to a child now.

NO CPS THEN, teachers & staff got by with "IN LOCO PARENTIS" authority.

Touch, my kid, like "Willie" did that day, and see what happens.
