Do y'all remember the Burbank Elementary paper drives we use to have in late 50's and early 60's?  Does anyone remember why we did them?

Nancy, I think it was to raise funds for the PTA. But I wouldn’t bet a lot of money on that answer.

Just returned from a cruise on Royal Caribbean.  This was advertised nearly a year ago for the class of 58,59,60, and 61.  The only folks to sign up were from 61.  We have not seen each other in years and we all had a great time.  Going were Kathleen ( Pee Wee) Wilson and husband Joe James,  Marilyn Ross, Betty Self, Gary Ross,my son Rodney and wife Susan, and of course Myself and Mary.  We were expecting more to join us but Cost, grandkids, time and fear of boats kept others away.  Marilyn was fearfull of seasickness cause of never cruising and just hearing about it.  She realized that not one time did she get sick.  We may do it again if we can get more people.  Think about it.

Russell Skinner--1963,  I don't know about Burbank Ele. but I think at Coop Ele. they  were supposed to buy those big Windmaker fans that they put in each room.. Of course some of the younger ones wouldn't know about that because that was before the days of air conditioning.

I was at Coop and my Dad took the Post, Press & Chronicle.  So I had a ton of papers to take for the paper drive.  If your room won you also got a free snowcone on Friday....yea!

Our Mom taught at Coop and I remember her tying the papers up in bundles to take. My sister and I went to Berry and I don't remember us collecting them there.

Wow, haven't thought about those paper drive days in a long time. Roosevelt Elementary had those going on as well.  And i'm thinking to benefit the PTA.  Seems like one day a week, or one day a month, mom would drop off all the Chronicle's we had stacked up at "the drive thru", or maybe it was called The Breezeway.  And, tied up in a bundle.  My years there, 59 through 66.

I remember the paper drives at Coop Elementary well because of what they accomplished for us.  The proceeds were used to purchase more fans for the classrooms.  There weren’t very many fans for each classroom.  So the fans had to be on “high” to be of any help.  But when they were on high, teachers had to shout to be heard by the whole class.  And without enough fans to be located around the room, it was dreadfully uncomfortable at times.  The paper drives were a God send as far I’m concerned.  At some point we had enough fans.  The next thing we got with the money was an actual water cooler in the cafeteria.  Chilled water from a fountain was a luxury.

Coady and I were at Coop, as well. I definitely remember the paper drives. I wasn't sure what they used the money for but I do remember the free snowcones.

For the first 2 years, we lived on Chapis, which ended at the school yard.  We moved to Moreau and lived there through the 6th grade.  The principal's name was Ms. Scarborough, she was a very kind lady.  We went to the front hall during the summer and rented games to play, Clue was my favorite.  We felt very independent being able to go by ourselves.  Some of our teachers, Ms. Musgrave, Ms.Muff, Ms. Hallmark, Ms. Young, Mr. Anderson.  Great memories of Ethel R. Coop Elementary!!

The principal was Ms. Scarborough.  What you may not know was that her husband was the principal before her. She succeeded him when he passed away.  I will never forget when she asked us in the Glee Club to sing Abide With Me in his memory. She just broke down and cried. As a child I had never seen anything like that before.  It made a lasting impression on me.

Weekly My two brothers and I all went to Coop. I started first grade at Coop and I definitely remember the paper drives. Man that was a lot of newspaper stacked up on the sidewalk along Parker road. But I really liked the walks around the old black top after lunch and the square dancing after school. Those were fun times!

I bet that was hard on her after loosing him. And To watch your principal cry would leave an impression on a child.

I remember the day President Kennedy as assassinated. I was in 5th grade at Scarborough and my class was on the 2nd floor right by the flag pole. Suddenly they were lowering the flag and it was too early for them to be taking them down so wondered why. Our teacher (Ms. Harris) was out in the hall talking to another teacher and when she came in the room she was crying and told us to get our tihngs together we were leaving school early due to the President being shot and killed. Several of the teachers were crying as we left and there out side were our Mom's all talking and crying. Then the next few days we stayed home and watched his funeral on TV. If was a sad time. t wonder today if the president was to be assassinated how people would react  It would be for me, no matter who was in office it would be a sad day for our country.

I too remember the paper drives......I also remember if our class brought the most we got a snowcone too.....Our MOM was the snowcome lady at Scarborough!!

Randy Tolman (1967)

With regret I must post the passing of my brother Fred Tolman (class of ‘65). Fred was a member of SHHS FFA, & the Cross Cuntry Track Team. After graduation he worked for NASA before joining the US Army where he spent a career of 26 years. Upon retiring as a Sargent Major he returned to the Houston area where he bought a water lilly farm in Anauch Texas. He owned and operated Water Lilly World until he retired, sold the farm and moved to Crosby. Fred’s wife Elaine preceded him in death just months ago. He leaves behind his steep son Peter Kline and several grandchildren. All 4 of Fred’s siblings also graduate from Sam Houston. Wallace, Randy, Loretta and Tammy. Fred will be greatly missed by us all.
