Sorry to hear about Robert Hinson. We talked a bit while wandering the halls of old Sam during the tour before it was torn down. And I just noticed that his wife is in the hospital. Prayers all around.

Is there any news about the class of 1972 reunion?

Judith Dunson (Satterwhite-Hilliard) (1961)

THE 60th HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
He was a widower and she a widow. They had known each other for a number of years, having been high school classmates and having attended class reunions in the past without fail.
This 60th anniversary of their class, the widower and the widow made a foursome with two other singles. They had a wonderful evening, their spirits high, with the widower throwing admiring glances across the table . . . and the widow smiling coyly back at him.
Finally, during one dance, he picked up courage to ask her, "Will you marry me?”
After about 6 seconds of careful consideration, she answered, "Yes... yes I will !"
Needless to say, the evening ended on a happy note for the widower. However, the next morning he was troubled. Did she say “Yes” or did she say ‘No‘? He couldn't remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. He went over-and-over the conversation of the previous evening, but his mind was blank. He remembered asking the question, but for the life of him could not recall her response.
With fear and trepidation, he picked up the phone and called her. First, he explained that he couldn't remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the past evening. As he gained a little more courage, he then inquired of her, "When I asked if you would marry me, did you say “Yes” or did you say “No”?
"Why, you silly man” she replied, I said Yes. Yes, I will! And I meant it with all my heart!"
The widower was delighted. He felt his heart skip a beat.
Then she continued. "And I'm so glad you called. I couldn't remember who asked me!"

Great story, Judith. Looking forward to our reunion. Even though my husband had passed away 2 months before the 55th reunion I still enjoyed seeing and visiting with my old (not to be taken as a suggestion of our age) classmates again.

Patsy Koch Young (1964) Re; Message #4873

I'm embarrased to  admit that I watched Rick Bailey play basketball at Houston Baptist College (it was a college back in 1968), not realizing that he was a SHHS alumn!  I believe that he was a Senior the year I started at Houston Baptist.  Even then, I only saw him on the basketball court, and greeted him, and his grilfriend when meeting  them occasionally in the college halls.  I wish I had taken the time to known him and his girlfriend better.  He seems to have been an outstanding person, not only in his Sam Houston High School years, but his whole life.  I remember his girlfriend as a sweet, shy young lady.  They both would have been good examples for me to imitate.

I'm also very sorry to hear about Robert Hinson's death.  We were in the same Youth Group at North Central Baptist Church, and also sang in Meistersinger's at Sam Houston. He was a very nice, jovial young man, with a beautiful base voice.   I was hoping to get to see him  during our 50th Reunion, even though he graduated a year after me, but he was trying to put his house, and his life together after the hurricane that hit Houston in 2017.  So many losses! So many memories! So many regrets of not being able to see these people one more time!

Ref: Rick Bailey - your msg # 4899

You are correct in that Ricky, as we called him, attended HBU and played basketball with them..  He also played basketball at Sam and basketball was his life away from real life.  His family owned the Bailey Drive in on Crosstimbers.  It was always a hang out spot for Sam students.  Probably still was when you attended Sam.  I don't remember when Mr Bailey sold that spot.

I was privileged to attend Fonville Jr High with Rick.   We were the first class to attend Fonville after opening.
Rick played basketball in Jr High as well as being the manager or trainer (don't remember what they called it).  He was small in size especially for basketball but made up for his size with his ball handling and leadership on the basketball floor.  The same carried over to high school.  Rick never met a stranger!  This was apparent when I first met him in Jr High as well as later in adult life.  When  my wife and I moved to Spring in 1972 we joined Spring Baptist Church we discovered Rick and his wife, Avie, had als joined just a little earlier.

Rick started a youth basketball program at Spring a few years later.  Both of my sons played in that from about 8 years old until they started middle school.  My oldest played on Rick's teams for many years.  That basketball program still carries on today (much larger of course) Rick was very involved in church, school and community activities.  He was elected to the Spring School Board multiple years.  In August 2006, Spring opened a new middle school and named it after Rick Bailey.  We lost a dear personal and family friend but he had not been well for several years.  I know he's in a much better place even though we miss him.

Mike Stewart (Stewart) (1963)

Is there anyone on this forum who attended Fonville Jr. High the very first year they were open who might remember a teacher named Johnny Taylor? I believe he taught history and he was the coach for the bowling team. I would really like to know what became of him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been serving as the manager of Camp Lost Pines in Warda, TX for the past 8 years. Here's a funny story (non-fiction). One day a salesman was driving down the highway. He came upon the most beautiful farm he had ever seen. He saw the farmer walking down the lane and had to stop to comment about the beauty of the farm. The salesman said "sir God has really blessed you with a beautiful farm. It is the most beautiful farm I have ever seen." The old farmer turned around and looked at his farm and replied,  "Yes sir God has truly been good to me, but you should have seen this place when God had it all to himself."

I want to thank all my friends, three of them, I wasn't very popular in school, for the birthday wishes. Like Mickey Mantle once stated, " If I knew I was going to live this long , I would have taken better care of my self."     Thanks guys!
