No, sold the house in October 1968 and we moved into town off of Ella and 610. Then both parents are deceased. Mom passed 03/18/1971 and dad passed 03/18/1982, both at 1:15PM.

Do you see or hang out with any class mates? Who?

None since I moved here in October 2008. But I do stay in touch with several friends via the internet. I used to see Wayne Gideon, may he rest in peace. Donna Ellis, Penny Robertson Wycoff, Sandy Everett, Harvey Hamil(rip), Gene Godkin, and several others. I still keep in touch with Denise Woodyard. Would love to reconnect.

What would we be surprised to know about you?

I'm not teaching anymore. I have a wolf hybrid named Lakota Sioux- Loki for short. She's my daughter. I am writing a cookbook and a novel/collection of stories about East Texas. Would give everything up to go live in a log cabin. The older I get, the simpler my dreams and goals in life have become. Not out to make a million, just have all my bills paid, a little money in the bank, and enjoy life... watch the sunsets, look at the stars at night, and smell the flowers. I love to travel, and I do still have a dream... I used to want a long distance highway worthy road hog. A simple tryke will suffice. Also used to want at least 20 acres of land with a wrap-around porch sitting far enough from the road that no one could see me if I chose to run around butt-nakie...LOL. I know... the girl with the modesty problem that had such a problem dressing out in gym that I NEVER took my slip off! and when we had pool days I'd wear my suit underneath my dress.
I'm also a games fanatic! I LOVE to play spades, but haven't been able to find ANYONE to play with... cards that is, since I left Cleveland,TX. Dominoes, and computer games.... oh I would be in Heaven. Also, went back to school to work on a M.S. degree in International Relations. Started it before I left Germany, but never got to complete it.

Where was your favorite HS hangout?

Bailey's Drive-Inn on Crosstimbers and Airline, OS'S on Airline and Canino, Vallians' Italian Restaurant on Main St, Los Troncos on Westheimer, Rainbow Rollar Rink, Old Market Square, Lodge PockRock, the Catacombs, SandMountain, and Westbury Square. A bunch of us used to go to Herman Park and picnic on the Hill at Miller's Theater

List your siblings and year.

M. Dean Buckelew, graduated in 1961. Lived in Burnet, Tx- passed away 10-23-2016 after a 3 yr battle with colon cancer.

School Story:

My senior year of high school was spent wearing a backbrace with a padlock on it. Broke my back in June of '67 in a car wreck on the way to spend the summer working for my aunt who lived in San Antonio and learning the Flower Shop business from her. She owned a shop there in Alamo Heights and it is still in existance today.
Funny story... going out on dates during my sophomore-junior years only to have my mom accompany as my chaperone... as per my dad said I could not go on "alone" dates until I was 16, my senior year.

What did you want to do or think you were going to do when you finished high school?

I wanted to prove to everyone that a person with a learning disability could be somebody and do something. I also wanted to succeed and to make my parents proud- as my dad's parents were share croppers in East Texas and I was the only grandchild to graduate and go on to college.

What and where was your 1st job? Do you remember how much you were paid?

Worked for Southwestern Bell as a long distance operator.

Favorite Quote

Roll with the punches/go with the flow. Afterall, I'm a Northside girl.

Famous or interesting people you've met?

Lyndon B. Johnson, James Brown, Bum Phillips, Patrick Swayze, Lee Majors, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, Billie Gibbons.

Ever been on TV? Tell us all about it.

They(City Under Seige) were making a special on the school at the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center when I was teaching there. I was in about a 20 minute segment.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Go fishing, play pool, cooking, write poetry, sew, enjoy life, travel, and playing with my pet wolf-hybrid,Lakota Sioux. Play Mah Jong Dark Dimensions.

Name something you dearly love. and why?

Life... sunsets, stary night skies, flowers. Things that most people take for granted. My sons... Kurt for not letting his medical battles get him down, and Derek for showing the world that this ADHD bi-polar kid could succeed and make a contribution to society. I am so proud of both of them. They have given me reason to push forward in times when it would be so much easier to just say screw it and give up. They will always be my babies.

Comments:

I've lived mostly in Texas with the exception of 5+ years in Germany. I've taught school for a combined period of 21 years, and I have worked many other jobs.

Any words of wisdom?

Live life to the fullest. Let those that mean something to you know it. Life is so short and unpredictable. Don't make a promise that you don't know if you can keep. ALWAYS do what you say as your word is your binding contract. You break your word and it's never able to be repaired.

Is there a moment in your life that stands out? A moment that defines who you are? Other than kids being born or your wedding day.

I lost both of my parents before I turned 33. They died at the same time, on the same date/hour/minute but 11 years apart. I have had to grow up with no family support or advice. I basically raised Derek by myself as he was my responsibility, and I was extremely protective of him. We are still close, but those apron strings are no longer tied. We might talk on the phone daily, especially when he is on the road, but I don't get to see him very often. If I had not lost my parents as a young adult, I might not have become so strong willed and self-reliant.
