Butch/Althea you're right the Atlantic Beach we knew growing up is so different now, but it's still home. Can anyone tell me when, why, and how Atlantic Beach acquired the name "Black Pine?" I moved to Jacksonville in 1968. When I first heard this name it was during the 70's and negative things were always associated with it. That made me so angry and for a long time I refused to call my hometown by that name. But now that God has given me a new song to sing (in every thing give thanks for this is the will of God) and a new attitude, I chose to look at Black Pine differently. The color Black is the accumulation of all colors and the pine tree grows tall and upright all over the world, from the northern to the southern hemispheres of the world. It adapts to extreme conditions imposed by elevation and latitude. It grows in the deserts, in sandy and acidic soil and it grows in the mountains and in the valleys. It provides food for birds, butterflies, squirrels and man. It's an evergreen and green represents faith. So what's in a name???

I remember Albert Waters being over the park and all the men you named playing in the games. Pee Wee Brown was a good batter. I also remember calling the park the diamond, but I don't ever remember the name Black Pine.

First of all, Its not a good idea to spank anyones kids, whether they are a stranger or someone you know. Legally, with abuse laws and aggression theories, its not a good idea to spank them yourself. I have a different opinion on that. The bible says, spare the rod and spoil the child. It's amazing to me that they don't want us to whip our kids to correct their behavior, but they have no problem slamming their heads into the hoods of cars or having them face down on the hot pavement while handcuffed behind their backs. They don't mind throwing our kids in jail, beating or even killing them in many cases. So it is up to us to continue to educate our kids and point them in the right direction, regardless of the obstacles or circumstances. There are a lot of young mothers that did'nt get what they needed to teach it to their children so how can they teach them ? Lets think back to how little some of us had or our parents or our parents-parents. They had very little, but look how far we have come and how well we have survived. Lets build on that and not let a biased system destroy our accomplishments for a dollar. Our women need to pull their dress down and our men need to pull their pants up. Let us also stop killing and destroying ourselves. So don't be afraid to pull that sister aside and say "you might want to wait until you get home to spank his tail for doing that." It's called "tough love." note: NO VISIBLE MARKS! lol

This type of mind/memory exercise and stimulation is good for all of us. You know we're approaching the age when many people start to experience signs of dementia and alzheimers. I've often wondered who were the first settlers on Atlantic Beach. Do you know? Does anyone else? I know it was through Divine Intervention that we all ended up there, but how did the community start? Willard said something very profound at his Dad's funeral. He said Cousin Dudley was a visionary, and he's right. He and Cousin Reva left Warrenton GA with the vision of building a self sufficient Black community during the era of Jim Crow. My Daddy, Jack, came to the Beach to be with them. I'd like to heard how/why everyones family came to Atlantic Beach. It's a puzzle, let's fill it in. So everybody please post how and why your family came to the Beaches. This includes those who normally don't post. It's important to pass this on to our children

I remember sitting on my mother's porch while inducted with outside influences and boredom we were admiring the beauty of the darkness of night when we notice that across Mayport Road before the new construction and additional street lights the trees at night appeared to be black. With nothing much more to do other than use our imagination we decided that it would be called Black Pine instead of "cross the road." Back in the day there were very little activities for youth so we sat around just talking, which was exciting! Especially if you were part of the "group". I remember our house and Mr. Joe's (Butch grandfather) front porch were places to hangout. We learned how to talk with each other, conversed about our day and the dreams we planned for our future. It's ironic that the name Black Pine would become an era for Atlantic Beach. It was not a name given because of culture or race, but an opportunity for a general conversation to erupt into an era for our people. See what is now missing! Conversation with your neighbor, your children, family members or just someone who's lonely. I remember the old folks sitting down telling us about back in the day, how they would have to walk five miles to do anything. It was always amazing that every time they would do something they would have to walk five or more miles. Some of them would have cars and still would have to walk five miles to the store. But I love to hear those only wise tales. That's my story of Black Pine and I am sticking to it. Some more names of baseball players on the Diamond Team: Troy Williams, Charlie Williams, Prince Wiley, Joe Brown, Calvin Brown, and The Dove Brothers, I am not sure which one.

If you stayed to late you would hear that human megaphone, Mrs Glady's hollering "Robert Warren!!!!!" I could go around the corner, but it was along time before i could go "across the road" (to black pine). "River of no return" was definitely out of the question. Jack's beach was no big deal cause it was school. Mayport was no big deal cause it meant work, peeling shrimp. Thank God for the big city "Jacksonville." Mom would go visit, which was okay. But that was'nt the same as going to visit the girls cause you was from the beach and you might wanna git on back cross the bridge. But then came growing up and cars and military and college and just relocating and it opened up a new world, and many have seen different parts of the world. As a matter-of-fact, Ms. Betty Jo Campbell (Harris) is in Italy vacationing now. Funny, after all that expansion and exploring, where do we meet again, BLACK PINE !!!!!

11/05/09 10:46 PM #784     Abigail Moss (Audate) (1971) Donnie you're right, it certainly was "dark at night" before the street lights, and quiet too, except for the crickets and night creatures. I remember that there were a lot of 'lightening bugs' back then and we kids would catch them and put them in a jar for our flash lights. Now that you've given me a little history on Black Pine I do recall the tall dark pine trees that looked black at night. Before they gave us the street lights we were told to be home when the sun was even with the tree tops. In the evenings if you looked towards the west, the sun seemed to disappear into the trees and then it quickly got dark. For the life of me, I still don't recall anyone calling the Beach Black Pine back then. I remember people on your and Willard's side of the road referring to the side with the park where I lived as 'cross the road.' Which sparked some mild territorialism..."our side is the best side". But everybody on the right side of Mayport Rd, where you all lived, claimed my sister and I were a part of their side because our cousins were on that side. It didn't matter to Alice and I, we went everywhere on the Beach...we had no boundaries, we thought we belonged everywhere and that we could go whereever. No boundaries, no walls, we still live that way today.
