Catherine Adele McCloud (Bennett)

Tommy, I found a site that has Edward's poems.

Google: Poetry by Edward McCloud at Spillwords.com

There are a couple of poems listed.

Edward would be very happy that you asked to read his poems.

Edward remained in Jacksonville and our sister is in Talley.  I moved to Maryland and found out what county life is all about and I love it!

My family's favorite story to tell on me is when I used to take our daughter to a little one lane road just down the hill from us and let her ride her bike.  The road is along the back barns of Shamrock Farms. (owned by the Steeler's, Mr. Rooney was still coming to the farm) The farm manager called to tell me that the horse dentist was coming and not to be alarmed if I saw someone in the barn.  Not long after we got settled, a man comes out of the barn and says "Hi, I'm Terry Bradshaw", I said "hello".  after a brief no talking he went back into the barn.  At dinner Donnie asked Suzanne if she had ridden her bike she said "yes, but we had to leave because the horse dentist kept trying to talk to Mom".  I said "yes, he came out several times, he had introduced himself as Terry Bradshaw"   "Oh Cathy, that is Mr. Rooney's new Quarter Back". I went back the next day but they had gone.  I really did want to say "sorry".  Now when he is on TV everyone says "there's the horse dentist"!

I am so sad to hear about Ed's passing. He was a true friend of mine who went out of his way to cheer me up when I was overwhelmed when the language barrier confused me.  English was not my native language and my time at Lee was spent mostly learning a new language and culture. The nickname given to me by my classmates (Frenchy) was cute at first but got old real fast but Ed understood all that and made my life easier by using humor and wit. I realized very early on that he was smart as a whip. The world lost a good man and I am sure Heaven is a happier place with him up there being himself. Thanks Ed for the memories!

Catherine, thanks for the spillword path. I found "Beacon" and "One Man's Face." A poet is a noble thing to be. I enjoyed you story of Terry Bradshaw. Funny! One question I have for you and then I'll sign off on our dialogue. You are pictured in the 1969 yearbook next to Edward. I'm assuming you were twins. Am I mistaken? Again thanks for directing me to some of Ed's poetry. Like everyone else, we're so very sorry for your lost.....Tom

Tommy, no Edward and I were not twins.  I was two year old when Edward was born.  I thought he was my new doll.  My father called me KaKi which Edward could not pronounce so he called me Jackie and I called him baby, until he was about six years old and he put an end to Jackie and Baby.  We would call each other by our pet names in private for a laugh.  I repeated sixth grade due to missing so much school due to ear infections whch left me with only 20% hearing in my left ear. I can use this disability at will! Because of my Feb. B-day I started school a year later, so when I repeated 6th grade Edward and I were in the same class.  It was not too bad since at St. Pauls the boys and girls were separated.

Hi Catherine,

Sorry to hear about Ed's passing.  Rob Rivers mentioned the Bike Race. My mom was there with her Kodak Super 8 camera.  Here is some video of the that. It's not a lot and film is 50 years ago. I am still looking for more. The first part of this clip is Rob and I with inspiration from Laugh In, Benny Hill then some Bike Race.

Views better is kept small, not as small as below but not fullscreen. Bike Race is about 1m 40 sec in.

Just sharing some information and NOT soliciting comments or debate but the quest to change the name of Robert E. Lee HS has begun. News for Jax 4 had an article today with community forum meetings beginning tonight at 6 pm in the auditorium.  They will also be March 4, 15, 23 & 25 with additional forums to follow.  You can also find the strategic process at the DCPS website.  You can make your comments or name suggestions at the forums. For those who may be interested. Stay well and safe fellow graduates. Jim Mackie '69

Also wanted to share condolences with the passing of Ed McCloud, always enjoyed his smile, sense of humor and yes he could drain those jump shots. Fashions have changed and basketball wore the shiny baggy shorts and Ed wore the uniform well representing a fine team. Coach Skinner and Nellie Vinal are legendary. As the manager for several sports as well as running the concessions for Coach Dingman, we all certainly enjoyed some fine games, including the playoffs vs. Wolfson and Raines. Rest well Eddie and stay safe my friends.

When renaming came up, several of us said Freebird would be a good name.

Good morning friends,

Please don’t forget about the Community Meeting tomorrow, March 4th (2 of 5) at Lee High School. It will be held in the auditorium at 6:00. It’s a good idea to arrive early. Many of us will be there at 5 on the Terrace. We need to continue to show up in numbers. We don’t have much time left. Voting starts April 26th so keep the pressure up. We will discuss the voting process in another post.

See y’all tomorrow

I don't live in Jax anymore, and it wasn't clear as to whether the "Community Forum" was FOR or AGAINST renaming, or even if that is what it's about!

However, I'd change "Freebird" to "FIREBIRD" - as after renaming, like a Firebird, it re-emerges from the ashes.

Firebird H.S. - built in mascot with that name too!

Food for thought.

John,

Thanks for sharing the link to Ric's YouTube platform. I had a great time going over several of the entries, particularly "Norwegian Wood" which is always a favorite, but really all of them. It's such a charge to see his passion still playing out over a lifetime. Music is a wonderful expression, and mental excercise that keeps us alive and vibrant. I still play in a band as well and believe me it keeps you young at heart. Musicians are great people at their core. They listen to music like no others. Taylor Corse and I stay in touch routinely; he in Az. and myself in N. Ca. You should hear him play guitar. He's fabulous and I'm sure there are others from our class as well. Ric has always been the mentor from the class of 69 and I truly enjoy this link. It brings a smile. If you're interested google " Indie Groove at Smiling Dogs Tasting Room in Kelseyville YouTube." It's dated Feb. 9 2020, just before Covidmania. It's 17:49 long and was videoed prior to a gig. It's rough but real.....Tom

Jim, thanks for the update on the suggested name changes. Is voting restricted to certain individuals? I'm a bit confused on the process here. I didn't quite understand the initial abbreviations. I like Riverside High. It seems to fit better than the rest. I was born at the old Riverside Hospital before it was demolished back in the day. My mother was a nurse there as well. On a lighter note; wasn't that the name of the high school Archie, Veronica and Betty went to in the old Archie Comics? Anyway, my $.02. Thanks for keeping us informed. Hope you well old friend! .... Tom

If anyone knew the history of the land before Robert E Lee Highschool . Two names would still remind them of plantations and that is Avondale and Riverside!

04/17/21 08:23 AM #318

Dorothea Youngblood (Lucas)

Riverside and Avondale were developed out of former plantation land. Most of this area was part of two plantations: Dell's Bluff, granted by the Spanish Florida government in 1801, and a tract eventually known as Magnolia Plantation, granted in 1815. Both changed hands several times before the American Civil War.[5] In 1868, Dell's Bluff's then owner, Miles Price, sold off the southern part of the plantation to Florida Union editor Edward M. Cheney and Boston developer John Murray Forbes, who platted the original Riverside development. The northern part Price developed himself as Jacksonville's Brooklynneighborhood.[6]

Riverside and Brooklyn saw modest growth until 1887, when the city of Jacksonville annexed them and established a streetcar line. Following the Great Fire of 1901, which destroyed most of Downtown Jacksonville, many displaced residents moved to Riverside. Wealthy citizens built mansions close to the river, while the less well-to-do purchased more modest bungalows and other homes further inland. The neighborhood grew steadily, with development continuing well beyond its original bounds to the south, until the collapse of the Florida land boom in the late 1920s. During this period, so many architects working in such a wide variety of contemporary styles experimented in Riverside that it has become the most architecturally diverse neighborhood in Florida.[5]Largely due to Riverside's profusion of bungalow homes, Jacksonville has what is likely the largest number of such structures in the state.[7]

One notable section of Riverside is Silvertown, a subdivision developed in 1887 for African Americans. Initially isolated from largely white Riverside to the east, it was eventually absorbed into the growing neighborhood. As such, Silvertown residents became some of the few black homeowners in Riverside through the period of segregation. A few one-story wood-frame houses in the area may date to the original development, including one house owned by a woman and then her daughter from 1887 into the 1980s.[8]

Like Tommy Nixon I also favor Riverside High.  Although Riverdale is a unique idea.  I was also was born in Riverside Hospital to a mother who was a nurse there. My mother also went to Riverside nursing school at the same location. The hospital location is now a Publix Grocery Store.  The Duval School  website did mention that alumni voters before the 1980s might need to be verified by the downtown office. I plan to take along my 1969 copy of the Blue and Grey as proof.

Too bad that I read that voting has to be done in person, or I'd vote Riverside too!  Hope everyone is well.  Susan
