Florida or New York? Posted Friday, April 10, 2009 02:36 PM Well - here we have the new boards and no one has seen fit to post - so I guess I will have to start it off. Lets start the discussion with the pros and cons of each location for the reunion. Also, let's have your feeling as to the date - my personal choice is sometime in October, because October still has good weather, grandkids are still in school, and it's usually a fairly quiet time of the year! It also happens to be my birthday month so you all can bring me presents! C'mon - let's get this REUNION going! Larry Schnitt |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Friday, April 10, 2009 08:57 PM I suppose Las Vegas is out of the question? Great Deals on Flights and Hotels right now. Stan Shapiro '59 |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Saturday, April 11, 2009 11:04 AM Las Vegas is great, but personally I thnk that the atmosphere there would detract from the purpose of the Reunion. |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Sunday, April 12, 2009 07:07 PM I'd vote for NYC since we all came from here and a lot of us still live in the NY Metro Area. One possible activity would be to take a tour of Jamaica HS today. I thought about doing that with a few friends about a year ago and I inquired about it, but didn't do it. I was told that a tour needed to be arranged in advance, but the current staff would do it for us (especially for a group of "seasoned" alumni). I haven't been back inside JHS since I graduated, but it looks pretty nice from the outside (about the way it looked in 1960). I believe the ethnic composition of the students has changed, but I bet it wouldn't otherwise seem that different from when we attended. |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Wednesday, April 15, 2009 08:00 PM It is true that the majority of those who have sent us their profiles live in the state of N.Y., but the majority of all those that have responded live outside the state (with Florida a close second). I believe there are advantages to holding the reunion in Florida: a)Many alumni have moved to Florida or they have a relative who has. b)The weather is more favorable, especially if a vacation is planned in addition to the reunion. c)For those needing to stay in a hotel, the cost is less in Florida (as would be our costs for venue, food, etc.). d)Larry Schnitt has been spearheading the reunion effort and he resides in Florida (as do I....in the same residential club community). This would allow for more "hands on" planning and administration. |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Sunday, May 3, 2009 11:14 AM I agree. There are more of us in GNY than anywhere else. Other NYers who agree should express their interest here so we know if we have enough interest to make it viable. |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Tuesday, May 5, 2009 10:28 AM Hi Larry, I have just found this website by realizing my 50th high school graduation date was fast approaching and wondering if any reunion are planned, and, thankfully, Google it. I am totally out of touch as I have been living in the Seattle area for many years.. You have obviously done a huge amount of work organizing this website and I want to thank you so much for this. If a reunion planned, I would prefer NYC.. Thank you so much again, Michael |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Wednesday, May 20, 2009 07:31 AM To have everyone converge to one place for a reunion is typical but may not be practical in our case. Could we select a date for the reunion and then have simultaneous reunions in several cities the same day--say Florida, New York, Seattle, LA, Wash DC? This way more people could get to attend a reunion. In my case I would be willing to attend a local reunion here in the Wash DC area but would not be all excited about going to another city. Some people who live in my area might very well want to attend a reunion in Florida because they know people who will attend that one and they are free to do so. It might be easier to plan a reunion if 5 people in 5 cities have to make arrangements for a max of 20 people than for a committee to have to plan for 200 in one place. The latter might have been possible for a 10 yr or 20 yr reunion but I think we have seen enough evidence that it is unlikely to happen for our 50th. --------Jay Herson '60 |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Saturday, May 23, 2009 12:26 PM Jay: Two years ago, class of '57 had a very successful reunion in New Jersey. I agree with " pick a date" and get going! We can do it if someone is in charge! Bobbie Selton Ruff '59 I think Florida would be a great idea...but set the date and let's get BUSY! Procrastination never gets it "done". |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Saturday, June 27, 2009 09:51 PM I vote for NY area. That said, unlikely I could attend. First half of October is the "other" Jewish holidays - Sukkot and Simchat Torah - so I could not come before mid-month. And Friday night/Saturday do not work for me. But go for it! Bill Landau '61 |

RE: Florida or New York? Posted Thursday, August 27, 2009 12:20 PM I'm all for New York. Although we live in Florida I am always excited to get back to Queens where I grew up. Also I enjoy being back "on the island". We still have family and old JHS friends there. A tour of the school would be great. |
