Smiley,

That is so cool - your Mom being in the first four year class! I'm still looking and asking - I WILL help you find one!!

Anyone, Ed (Edward T.) Matheny Jr. - class of '40 - has put together a tremendous 129 page historical book on SWHS, "The Rise and Fall of Excellence, The Story of Southwest High School, R.I.P.". It can be obtained via Ed or Rainy Day Book Store, Fairway, KS.  We got a copy the year after out, 2001; I think $10-12. Well worth it - great pixs and full page of antics and accomplishments of '70 class. Karen Stark: thanks much for your great quiz/zes - has been great fun - is Ed's book where you got your quiz stuff?

Quite a coincidence - last night at a dinner including Ralph Turek and Mike Ward (both '69 grads and coming to 9/25 '70 and '69 Loose Park picnics w/families - now up to +/- 30 from '69) I shared the above book with Ralph and he opens it up on the page with pixs of "Camelot" play; fun stroke of chance. Mike comes over later and guess where he opened the book?! How weird was that - out of 129 pgs and they both open it to the same page; on a most memorable senior event!!

Hi Janie,

I saw one on Ebay today and they are asking $79.97 plus shipping. Someone in Buckner, MO. I'll send you the link if you can't find it.

Gladys, I'm hoping to find something a little cheaper than that! But I'll keep looking. I've checked Ebay in the past and found the cost prohibitive. Thanks for the tip!

 Good morning from "Joisey" everyone....

Just registered for reunion and donated a copy of my latest book for a door prize. Since I am heading to Nashville for a music biz conference post-KC, I have to ship ahead some books. Anyone wishing to purchase a personalized copy from me and who doesn't feel lucky enough to win the one door prize, please email me directly (spledgin@embarqmail.com or ledgin@ledgin.com) so that I can ship enough to have on hand. For a full description of Discovering Folk Music, pls visit my web site, http://ledgin.com. The reviews are finally starting to come in, ranging from "Recommended" to "brilliant." I'm thrilled. And btw, the book will definitely please you aging/ageless hippies and folkies out there. See ya'll next month.

Best,

Stephanie P. Ledgin

Spread the word on the various ways we can get this Website paid for--also, when people ask why it has no advertising--see below.

WHO PAYS?

Many web site systems bill each member and/or place advertising on the site. Class Creator sites are strictly free of advertising, and 100% free for Classmates to use. Anything short of this detracts from the site and detracts from the goal, which is to gain as close to 100% Classmate participation as possible.

Class Creator sites are funded by just 1 person or entity — usually the Site Administrator or the Reunion Committee. While this allows sites to be free of ads and free for Classmates to participate, it is not always possible for 1 person or entity to support the site. Thus we have provided 2 tools which can be used to offset the cost of subscription:

  1. Donations Module: Enter your PayPal email address, and with 1 click you can accept donations from Classmates to help support your web site or other class activities. When you need funds turn on the donations module, and when the funds have been collected turn it off. We've made it easy to raise funds with a single click.

  2. Refer A Friend Program: After creating a site, you will have access to our Refer A Friend program. Receive $50 when you refer a friend to Class Creator. Just 2 referrals per year pays for your entire site.

These two tools can not only offset 100% of the cost of running a class web site, they will often produce a surplus which can be applied toward class reunions and other class outings.

Hi Mandy,

re: reunion/site donations

I don't see either "tools" - particularly the "donation module" - in the lefthand categories. Where to go?

Thanks,

Chris

 Hi Chris,

I think this is something either Beth or Gladys has to set up.  Ask em to!

All the best,

Hi All,

In my "Find Five" classmate effort I'm 4 out of 5. Not bad, but am determined to find Barbie Goldman (Gordon). Last the class records have is that she lived in Chesterfield, MO but she's no longer @ the address we have of record. As well, her ph # has changed. Purportedly she was/is married to a well known St. L. broadcaster, Charles Gordon but I'm not finding him (via Google) either. Anybody with anything else towards finding her; any relatives, college contacts or mutual friends? You can reach me via "profile" message window, e-mail: cmahls@earthlink.net or ph#: 913.831.4494. Thanks!

 Hi all,

I sent off a message to one of my non-SWHS friends from my KC days with whom I went on Pilgrimage to Israel in 1969. Barbie Goldman Gordon and others from SWHS were on that trip and we'll see if I get a response with any more current info. I previously FB'd and Google'd any number of "missing" classmates over the last few months and I see some have in fact connected here. Chris, since you're right there in the KC area, here are a couple of names who apparently are local but for whom I do not have emails:

Cheryl B. Samet
7575 W 106th St
Overland Park, KS 66212
(913) 649-4147

Diane Karbank is involved there in her family's real estate company, and I've sent off a FB message to her.

See you in September!

Hello everyone,

There are many people on the "Missing" list that know about the website and have been sent notices and emails via Facebook, Classmates.com and if we know their email, have been sent the direct invitations. I have just updated the database and have a list of those names and last known phone numbers and/or addresses. In order to respect their privacy, I cannot post that on this website. If you are interested in making some phone calls please contact me and I can send that Excell file to you individually. The biggest help everyone can give is to call your friends on the missing list and get them to at least register on this site. They do not have to commit or pay and can keep their information private, but it does keep us all from continuing to search because we think they are "missing". Please be respectful of the fact that some people DO NOT want to be bothered. Just let me know and we can delete their name from the class list.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Gladys

Gladys-

Thanks!

Chris -  My 5 are :  Mike Bond, Rick Brewer, Rosemarie Burlette/Ken Price (married), Pam Oldberg, Leo  Pink and I'll throw in Bobbie Adamson Radford as a bonus.  (I'm cheating . . .I have a connection with each of these people or have spoken to them recently, but that still counts, right???)

Beth, I sure hope you can find Pam Oldberg. I haven't seen her since the late 70s when she and I both worked at Missouri Division of Family Services. Please tell her we want to see her!

NEW SUBJECT

We have a professional photographer lined up for our reunion weekend.  I'd like to be able to confirm the time of his appearance at each of our three events and begin scouting good places for us to pose.

To that end, i am soliciting suggestions.  For example, regarding the timing, we should do our "sitting(s)" early enough in the evening to move on to just having fun, but late enough to give everyone a chance to arrive.  I would also like to hear if folks are interested in sub-set groupings, i.e. Bingham, or grade schools, athletic teams, clubs, etc.

Thanks for your input.  (Say cheese!)

Hi Karin-I'd like to do the grade school groups as well. And I agree with the idea of 'early enough but late enough' and then we can get busy having fun.

 Hi everyone!

This is last call for those who want me to bring a copy of my latest book, Discovering Folk Music, to purchase and personalize at Reunion! Several of you have already indicated you would like copies; thanks! Please let me know by this weekend as I need to pack up a box for both KC and my biz trip to Nashville. Looking forward to seeing everyone! Please email me directly at spledgin@embarqmail.com (that's a q not a g) or at ledgin@ledgin.com to reserve a copy.

Does anyone know where Ted Sykes is???

09/19/10 03:51 PM #24

Chris Mahley

Hi Robyn - and all,

Robyn, re Ted Sykes: I remembered that Ted is a frat bro so I looked him up in a directory, found him in San Fran and called him. He's flattered - as well he should be - that you're wondering about him. With so short a notice, he didn't think he could made the reunion but will get to this site and hopefully put a "profile" together. He says he's happy and healthy (that's about all we can ask for at this stage of the journey, yes?!) and wishes us a great time @ the reunion.

All, I've been watching the active participant % growing for this web site and it's exciting to see the surge! I think it's exceptional after 40 YEARS that we're growing towards 50%. Alot of calls, e-mails surely are making it happen - and (I'd like to hope) maybe the "find five" challenge (see past messages on this forum) are making a difference. Let's keep it up: the more the merrier!

All, Am much looking forward to the weekend - with the kickoff on friday @ Tanners. Let's not forget to patronize our fellow classmate, Pat Walsh, who has operated Walsh's Corner Cocktails (just east on 85th @ intersection of Wornall) for many years. Whenever I go there, it's like a SWHS reunion - either seeing classmates or hearing about them! Also Pat is a sports nut and a veritable source of baseball history; especially Babe Ruth! Much fun going there - and prices can't be beat.

All, here's a trivia question:  what was the name of the Brookside bar/lounge before it became Charlie Hoopers (hint: a funny colored pet) and who's SWHS family ran it? The first female and male winners should get a huge hug from all attending the reunion! Let me know of your answer and I'll declare you 1st - and eligible for all those hugs.

Darn - just saw an ugly Chiefs play! Have a great day!!

Chris

Hi Chris and Everyone,

Chris-So glad you found Ted Sykes!

Thank you for all the updates and help in finding our Classmates. We have 134 people registed for Saturday Night (105 Classmates and the rest are their quests). Our numbers appear to be higher for Friday night from people that have said they are only coming Friday.

I also wanted you all to know that of the 317 Classmates on the "Missing" list, we have contact information on 43 and they have been contacted and have the information about the Reunion. Some don't do email at all and others only from work. Others just don't feel comfortable about registering on the website. Unfortunately with this website, until they log on, they remain on the "Missing" list. I have an updated Excel file if any of you want to help locate more. Please email me and I will send it to you.

Thank you all again.

Gladys

Keep the Poll going guys...numbers are climbing.

Request for photos:

If anyone has any snapshots of our 10 year reunion, I would love to add them to the reunion photos. It's the only one that I don't have except for the group photo. Also if anyone has a photo of Nelson Elementary, I would love that as well. It's the only school that I could not photograph the name on because UMKC covered it with a board and new name. I've searched old KC archived photos and can't seem to find any.

I hope you are all getting excited about this weekend...I think the weather is going to be great!
