Kristine Dolan Stiles

I am the France Family Distinguished Professor of Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke University. I specialize in contemporary global art with a focus on performance and conceptual art, artists’ writings, and trauma and destruction in art. I have authored over 100 essays, primarily in artists books and catalogues throughout the USA and Europe. Among my books are "Theories & Documents of Contemporary Art" (1996, 2012); "Correspondence Course: An Epistolary History of Carolee Schneemann and Her Circle" (2010); and "Concerning Consequences: Studies in Art, Destruction, and Trauma" (2016). I often work as a curator, and have advised such museums in the United States and abroad as the Museums of Modern Art in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, the Solomon R. Guggenheim, the Whitney Museum, and the Walker Art Center, among many others. I have practiced as an artist and I am equestrian, who owns a beautiful mare that I ride daily. I have been married three times and have been single now for over a decade. My first husband was my Southwest High School sweetheart, Randy Stiles, whose name I retained because I had begun to publish while still married to him. My professorship at Duke University began in 1988, a year after I finished my doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley, and I have been teaching at Duke every since. I am happy, productive, and love my life.
