In grade school we were friends and spent many fun times between our two homes. I was saddened when I heard the news of her disappearance. My Mother and some other neighbors in the J C Nichols neighborhood followed the story at the time. Our neighbors son was close to Linda's brother and heard stories through them.
Sounds too familiar a story with all the women in the midst of breaking up who are found dead or missing. Just think Scott Peterson, Drew Petersen, OJ Simpson...
I do agree the photo in the newspaper didn't look like Linda Matthews when I was friends with her in 1956-63.
I went out with Linda a few times while we were at KU and although the picture is kind of grainy, it does look a lot like I remember her around '67 or so. At the time, I remember that her disappearance was under suspicious circumstances and although her husband was suspected there was never any proof or charges. Karla is right about her height: she was only 5' or 5'2" but you can't really tell about her height from the picture.
Following is a link to a newspaper article published 3 weeks after she diasappeared. I didn't include this in my original post because the second article, 10 years later, gave more details and was more current. The following article states she was 4 feet 11 inches tall and 37 years old. The age would be correct if she was born in 1947.
I last ran into Linda when we were both in our early 20's. It is so strange if she did disappear, because we had an unusual conversation. She was talking about traveling in Europe and her needing to be careful of people who deliberately kidnapped white females and took them to countries in Asia. I had never heard of this but she warned me to be careful and said I should always be aware of my surroundings when I traveled. It is hard to believe she might have really disappeared. How tragic!
As a person I enjoyed her. She was always so nice to everyone and fun to be around.

But we all have changed over the years.
I feel blessed to have known her.

This is our Linda. She married Singh in July 1971 at the Country Club Christian Church.
