Cause of Death: Stomach Cancer

"Chase and I were grade school friends. Our moms were good friends so we spent hours hanging out in backyards of both homes. I recognized his father, Lew, at the "y" in La Canada . He was working out! Incredible. He briefly related Chase's passing to me. As I didn't spend time with Chase in high school, I don't know what his accomplishments were. He was artistic, like his mother, who was a successful interior designer."

Mark Alarik forwarded me an obituary about Chase which I managed to track-down as originating in the Mariposa Gazzette, Dated May 29th, 2014. Here it is:

Chase William Hastings was born on Sept. 11, 1952 in Glendale, Calif. to parents Lewis James Hastings, Sr. and Margaret Louise Chase. Chase, aged 61, passed away at his home on May 19, 2014 with his family by his side.

Chase grew up in La Canada, Calif. where he attended kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating from La Canada High School in 1970. He then went to Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., where he earned a B.A. in public relations in 1974.

From 1980 to 1983 he owned and published Dairy Scope Magazine. In 1981 he met and married his wife Pamela. They were blessed with two daughters, Megan and Lindsay. Chase became a teacher and taught in the Reedley and Mariposa areas for nine years. From there he began his journey to attain his lifelong dream of working in nature. Chase was the manager of the Yosemite Association store in Mariposa, and worked at Yosemite Institute for several years before moving on to Yosemite National Park where he reached his dream of becoming a Park Ranger stationed at the Arch Rock Entrance Station. Chase was happiest in the mountains, walking by a stream, surrounded by the beauty of nature and God's presence all around him.

Chase took great joy in being surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren, who kept life exciting. He loved sharing his passion with nature with others at his job, as a teacher and with so many wonderful friends.

Chase is survived by Pamela, his wife of 33 years, his daughter, Megan Buttgereit and her husband Jeremy and their children, Abby and Addison, Lindsay Robinson and her husband Blevin and their children, Kaliska, Daniel, Danika, and Haylenn, his brother Lewis Hastings and wife Julia, his sister Hilary Ross and her husband Tony, his aunt Carol Hoagland and husband Jim -- as well as much-loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Chase is preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Margaret Hastings and his aunt Luellen Hill.

The family of Chase Hastings wishes to express its appreciation for all the love, prayers and words of sympathy for its loss of a beloved husband and father. Your expressions of love have meant so much to us. We would like to say thank you to our Gateway Community Church family and Providence Christian School friends. A special thanks as well to Bristol Hospice for its support and care during this time.

The family is holding a memorial service to celebrate Chase's life at Gateway Community Church at 11 a.m. at 353 E. Donna Drive in Merced on May 31 (2014).
