In Memory

Kort Pereira

Kort Stanley Pereira passed away November 4, 2020 after a courageous fight against cancer at 67 years old.

He was a proud USC graduate who achieved a BS in Chemical Engineering. His first job right out of college was for Mobil Oil and between that and Aera Energy he accumulated 40 years of working in the oil industry.

About twenty years ago, at a class reunion, Kort and I reunited.  The last time we had talked was shortly after graduation.  We went back in time to Baseball teams, fast cars (his bright yellow ’56 Ford truck  with the Chevy big block, my ’68 “goat”), his parents’ home in Searchlight, skiing at the river (thanks Cheryl for teaching me to ski), the Spade, etc.  Our wives recognized the connection and from then until Christmas 2016 we exchanged cards.  In ’17, ‘18 and ’19 Julie and I continued to send, but we never heard back.

Fast forward to January 2020.  We received a card from Diane (Kort’s wife) thanking us for the cards along with a three-page letter.   Summarized, the letter said that in February 2017 Kort was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer with few months to live.  He fought with immunotherapy treatments and the cancer went into remission until mid-2019.   Then, numbers went up, surgeries happened, and another round of immunotherapy treatment.  The letter ended with “Happy 2020!”.

Kort passed in early November 2020.

I have finally come to terms with the loss.  As I reflect, FIS & LCHS were a small part of my life, but some of the relationships made were for a lifetime.  Rest in Peace my friend.
