Marta Lowe (Aronson)
NTHS Friends,
First, in the midst of this continuing pandemic, I hope you are well, however wellness is defined 13 months in . . .
I read this article this morning and felt moved to reach out to the advisor of the North Thurston Public Schools Black Student Union Coalition. I am sharing with you in case you were not aware and are similarly moved. In a world with so much need, it can be hard to know where kind words or a donation will make a difference - this story felt very close to home. If you are in touch with other alumni you think might want to show support, please share.
No need at all to reply - I can imagine how busy you all are. Sending my best to you all, and hoping for better times to come, regardless!
Marta

Subject: NTPS BSU Coalition - Note of Support
To: sjanecke@nthurston.k12.wa.us <sjanecke@nthurston.k12.wa.us>

Hello Ms. Fappiano,
I read with anger and deep sadness of the racist assault on student leaders during the NTPS BSU Coalition meeting on self-care and mental health practices. Following weeks full of publicized violence against Black/African Americans, to learn that these students were subjected to a racist assault when trying to find ways to heal from such trauma is devastating. I can only imagine the impact it had on them.
I graduated from NTHS in 1989. As an alumna, I want to support the efforts of NTHS and NTPS to create truly safe and inclusive learning environments, especially for students of color. We won’t achieve education equity without it, and equity is exactly what we owe to these students.
To show our support for the students of the NTPS BSU Coalition, my family and I would like to make a donation in the name of the Coalition to the nonprofit of their choice in support of mental health in communities of color. We are also happy to choose an organization and follow up once the donation is made if that’s easier. If there is an alternate way to show support the Coalition would appreciate more, we welcome suggestions.
Mostly, we want the students that comprise the Coalition to know we condemn in the strongest terms the assault on their efforts. We value their presence in NTPS, as well their work, and sincerely hope it continues.
In appreciation and support,
Marta Lowe (NTHS Class of 1989)
