Merrick's parents were also members of my synagogue, Lincolnwood Jewish Congregation, now L.J.C.-A.G.B.I.. My parents, Harry and Rose Warshausky, who were also active members, and myself, knew the Garlands through there.

I am happy that Merrick has distinguished himself in the field of law and has put Lincolnwood on the map.

Let's hope he will be an effective Attorney General who will serve his four year term.

I object to the use of this forum to promote blatently political views  of any kind and would appreciate keeping this the collegial collection of personal messages it has been since its inception.

 Everyone,

I agree with Alan about this being a political forum. It is a page designed to connect our former classmates. Everyone has different religious and political beliefs. Let's try to keep this friendly and non-religious and non-political.

Merle: Thank you for sharing that tidbit of information about Merrick. We all know him and remember him from Lincolnwood and wish him success in his position at the DOJ.

Fondly

You're welcome, Mary Beth. May I add that people in our age group (retired or semi-retired) have time to contemplate political views? I agree as well that  this is not the appropriate forum.

It seems to me that if our classmates are expressing themselves in a way that doesn't harm anyone, they should be permitted to post what they want. Who among us should be the arbiter of what is or isn't appropriate. I certainly am interested in what Mark has to say and what others think.

I would like to address the current issue on this message forum, not as a fellow manager of the site, but as another alum.  I don't speak for the rest of the managing team and especially not for Myron.  I want to make that clear.

My recommendation is for anyone who has a problem with what a person says on this forum to take the issue up with the person themself and/or with the managers of the site.  Public displays of the chastisement of fellow student alumni do not add to the decorum of the forum, but rather detract from any sense of camaraderie, which is a major purpose and benefit of this site.

To address Mark's inclusion of his letter, he needs no defense.  He is an intelligent and more than capable orator who has no trouble speaking up for himself.  So what follows is an opinion, not a defense.

I think there is a relevance to posting what Mark did because it has to do with a fellow alum who also hails from the same town as we do.  There is a definite context to his placement.  Contrary to what has been suggested, I don't see this forum as being used as a bully pulpit by Mark.  He has other avenues for expressing his political opinions.  He certainly doesn't need this as one.  Be that as it may, it is up to each individual to read or not read what is posted here.  No one need publicly judge another person for what they say anywhere on this site.  I recommend that his forum not be used for arguments or contention.  Again, I believe it is best to bring it up with the person and/or custodians of the site.

Amy, David, and Merle,

Thank you for your responses. I was originally one of the people chosen to take care of this site but I have backed out because I have way too  much going on.

However, I think all of you made valid points. I have to agree with David in that if someone wants to discuss anything with an individual that posts anything, one should go directly to the person that posted. I also agree that this forum should not be used as a political platform since we all have different political opinions.

I agree that it was nice of Mark to post something he has written and I'm quite sure he did not do so to state a position but rather to share what he had written, as others have done with pictures and writings, etc.

Just keep in mind that the reason the Class of '65 Reunion Committee decided to create this site was to have everyone keep in touch, share memories, share accomplishments, and unfortunately, share death notices. It is not intended to be an "editorial" or "opinionated" site. :)

With that in mind thank you for all of the comments that have been made. It's just nice to see such a large response. :D

Happy 70th to the Class of 1969 members! How "terribly strange to be 70". I wish everyone continued good health and happy times in the future!

Fondly,

Mary Beth Platt (Crum)

Have a separate ' chat room' for political discourse. Those that want to enter can do so.

Thank you, Marybeth and Bob, for bringing this to a helpful conclusion.

And to think we did this without adult supervision!

Bob,

That's a great idea. Talk with Myron about it. He's the one that actually "works" on setting things up on this site. I am unable to do that.
