While serving in Alverca, (a small town about an hour north via train from Lisbon) we had an investigator named Christina. She had a boyfriend who offered to take us sight-seeing out to the coast on a P-day, Cascais, Azenas do mar, Cabo da Rocha, Boca do Enferno, and so forth. The problem came when 6 elders, Elder Platt, Myself, Beacham, Ryder, Peugnet, and his comp. showed up, and tried to fit in the car, along with Christina and her boyfriend. Either 2 of us had to stay back, or we had to make other arrangements. The "solution" to our dilemna was having 2 of us ride in the trunk. The car was definitely overloaded, and I remember the tailpipe dragging on the road frequently. Every time we got to another sight, we would pull over and park in a discrete area of the parking lot, form a human shield, open up the trunk and let the 2 in the trunk out. Since Elder Platt and I were the "hosts", we never had to ride in the trunk

I have been living in NJ since I returned from my mission in '84. I live in Western NJ, not far from PA, and work in Newark a.k.a. "Little Lisbon" The area that I am in is pre-dominantly Portuguese. Driving or walking down the streets is not unlike walking through Lisbon or one of it's suburbs. Most of the merchants speak Portuguese and cater to the Port, community. The area is loaded with pastellerias, churrasquerias, cafes, etc.. Needless to say, I am never at a loss as to what to eat for lunch, bolos de Belem, caldo verde, feijoada... There is a Portuguese speaking branch of the church which meets in the neighborhood. Several years ago, as a member of another stake, I was the high council advisor to the branch. I quickly learned how much of the language I had forgotten. It's not quite like riding a bicycle, but it began coming back-although, I never was able to speak as well as I could ride a bicycle.
