Gina, what a nice idea! I would be happy to bake and help you.

Stephanie Butler (Percefull)

Great idea, Gina. We need to find out if there are any other classmates or family members of classmates that are serving in a war zone. Kenneth Cane, are you still in Iraq? Please let us know.

10/02/08 01:36 PM #705

Gina Martin (Eggebrecht)

Absolutely, Stephanie - let's send to them all! We can either go down the list and send to a different one each month (or every other week?) or we can "divide and conquer" with some of us sending to one and some sending to another.

Sharon- Happy Birthday.

Hey gang - I've heard back from Keith. He is in an area where he can receive care packages from home and he'd LOVE to get them. I say let's deluge him with Lion Love in this way. :)

Guys, we want y'all involved, too! This isn't just for the girls to do. Not everyone is going to bake. :)

Anyone who wants to be involved, please send me an email so we can coordinate a mailing date and have everyone be jealous of Keith at mail call. I also need to give you Keith's address so you can send stuff to him. :) Since this is a public forum and anyone can see it, I don't want to publish the address here.

If you want more information and/or ideas of things that can go into a care package:
Military Mailing Restrictions are here. Be sure to check those out.
Kim Komando gives a great list of ideas for care packages on her Operation Komando page, which is
here.
Operation Baking GALS got help from a Military Wife on how to best pack a care package, especially one that involves baked goods and it is here.
AND, the US Postal Service has an APO/FPO Flat Rate Priority Mail Box that you can stuff as full as you can get and ship it for $10.95. :) You can actually order a pack of 10 boxes at the USPS website here. The boxes are free but you have to pay shipping. You can also check w/your local PO to see if they have the boxes.

Gina- I am not a great cook, but will send some items that you all suggest. Send me the address, please.
Thank you

Hey gang ~ I just received this note from Kenneth Cane:

"I will be back in Feb 2009 for about 15 days. I am currently in Baghdad waiting for a flight to my base things are fine here. Thanks for checking on me.
Kenneth Cane"

He is a firefighter for the military. It would be great to send him a care package, too. I will get an address for him as soon as I can.

Stephanie- sounds good just send us the addresses for these brave young soldiers and we will do our best.

Okay Kids...serious business here...I need your input...

I'm working on planning an outing over the Thanksgiving weekend. I need to figure out what/when will allow the most people to participate.

If you don't want to post your plans on the forum, just click on my name and send me a private message, but please respond.

I would like to know:

1. Are you going to be in LR over the holiday weekend?

If yes, then:

2. Would you like to get together?

If yes, then:

3. When would best fit in your plans OR would not be possible for you? (example: we fly home on Sat. so must be Friday... or we eat turkey in Texas, but we'll be back for Saturday)

4. If you want to bring your hosts or house guests please include the number in your party.

Depending on the number attending and the day selected, we have several options, so please respond asap so that I can give plenty of advance notice.

Thank you in advance for participating, and encouraging your friends to participate. If you don't vote, you can't gripe about being left out.

Gina Martin (Eggebrecht)

Well, heck, Kim...I've already forgotten the questions! Hang on and let me go back to see what they were...I remember the first one

1. We will be in LR on Turkey Day

Editing to add -

2. Would love to get together
3. Saturday is best since I shop until I drop on Friday
4. It would likely just be me unless this is something you're planning to include entire families (in which case you are a brave woman in addition to an award winning cook!)

10/05/08 09:40 PM #713

Gina Martin (Eggebrecht)

Stephanie, thanks for getting in touch with Kenneth. Yep, we definitely need to send him a care package, too.

Everyone - Kim Mordecai and I were talking the other day and if you want to participate in care packages for our classmates but don't want to ship it yourself - please let me know. I'll be happy to meet you somewhere and pick it up (provided you're in central Arkansas) and pack it with my stuff.

Kim and I are planning on baking - but that's NOT required. There a many other things the guys and gals over there need!

Cyndi Jones (Sweger)

Gina .. yes, Nik (my son) is in an area where he can receive packages and love to get them. I have made it my mission to make sure he receives at least 1, usually 2, a week. His needs vary depending on whether he as at the FOB (forward operating base) or COP (not sure what it means, just know that it is smaller than the FOB. His favorite is macadamia chocolate chip, or oatmeal raisin, but honestly, he would appreciate anything that ya'll send to him. I participate with Blue Star Families here in town and we send care packages out about 3-4 times a year. Sometimes it 2-5 packages, at others its been as many as 10 packages. He shares what ever he gets, unless its his favorites, and then he might .. let me know who to get his address to and i'll send it out.

I can't wait until this weekend folks!

Michele L. Rowe (Pickett)

Kim Hinson Jobe finally got a hold of Brena tonight. I had been trying, but no luck. Danielle is at Washington Regional. She has taken some chemo/radition. The doctors believe the tumor is back to the same size as prior to the surgery. Danielle has had to go on a vent--and they are not expecting her to be able to get off of it. Brena is trying to do it all--work, take care of Danielle, Guy and Michael, worry, etc. Brena is surviving, but not doing great. Brena has asked for all of our prayers. Danielle is continuing treatment--but it is truly in God's hands. If any of the NW folks can check on them, it would be great. I am hoping to be able to go see them in the next couple of weeks.
It truly means so much to know so, so many of our high school friends can pray with us over such things--great or small.
Love,
Michele

Liz and walkers--ya'll have a great time Sat. I am going to Phil's nephew's wedding in OK. It is strange...the nephew was a ring bearer in our wedding.

Gina--the one thing I can cook well is cookies. I would love to help with the care packages. Let me know. I may be able to get some letters/pictures from some of my students to include in the packages too.

Kim--the Picketts are in town for Thanksgiving. Our parents are still in LR--Phil's parents still live in the same place. But I am with Gina---Sat. is better. My sister drags me all over LR shopping on Friday. However, my children don't need babysitters. My baby is 6 foot, 220 lbs., but he is only 15.

I hope everyone is well and blessed!

I will not be attending the "Race For The Cure" this year, instead I am heading to Alabama for a week after getting cabin fever due to being stuck in the house for more than a month because of bronchial pneumonia!

Yet, know that my sister Cammy and I are supporting you folks all the way in spirit and are grateful for all you folks have done! As I've written before, we are cancer survivors. We are grateful for God's healing power and mercy!

Cyndi,
I am sorry, I will not get to see you! I was really looking forward to seeing your smiling face and hearing you laugh! Gosh, you always had the best and contagious laugh! Also, Mother and I are going to work on a package for Nik and will send it to you after I return home, Monday. I adore and miss you my long lost friend!

!Always, GinaJeans

Okay, gang - Kim Mordecai and I have talked a couple of times about care packages for our Lion Troops (and Lion Kid Troops, LOL) Here's the scoop --

1. If you want to help but don't want to bake - you can still participate! This can involve anything from buying other stuff that the guys need or want to contributing money for us to use for postage. (one of our classmates has specifically said, "Just let me write you a check and you go buy/do" LOL)

2. You can drop off your contributions (stuff or $) at Kim's house during the brunch on Saturday.

3. We'd like to make sure our boxes to our troops are stuffed to the gills. :) Kim and I will be happy to collect the stuff together and ship it all at one time - in as many boxes as we need. We just want 'em stuffed!

4. Please, please let us know if you want to participate - post a note here (or if you really don't want to post here, PM either me or Kim).

5. I've emailed Keith to get a specific list of things he wants/needs and we'll do the same thing with Kenneth and Nik (actually, we'll rely on Cyndi for info on Nik). We want to target our goodies to *our* Lions/LionKids and if they want to share, then that's fine -- but our focus is Keith/Kenneth/Nik.

I'm exhausted and old and have a baby who will be awake in about an hour so I'm going to bed gang! If you have ANY questions about this - please let me or Kim know!

WOW WOW WOW!!!!

I set a goal of $500 for our team to raise, and we are at $445! That's 89% of our goal! I am so proud!
In addition to the registration fees, Vicki W. and April H. have brought in donations, and Steph B. and Michelle R-P have been kind enough to make donations to Komen in the name of our team even though they can't be here for the race. Now here's the biggie... Cyndi Jones-Sweger has brought in an additional $225 in donations!! Way to go Cyndi!!
If anyone else would like to make a donation so that we can hit %100 of our goal that would be so incredibly COOL!! If you out of towners (or anyone) would just go to our site and donate 5 bucks, we could quickly reach our goal. You can get to our race site through the front page of our class site.
I am so pumped!
We have 12 people on our team, not bad for a first year. Be advised, next year I expect at least 20! So be ready to sign up in 11 short months!

10/09/08 01:59 PM #722

Cyndi Jones (Sweger)

It gets better Elizabeth .. I received an additional donation fo $250 this afternoon. We have EXCEEDED our team goal. I had oroginally set my goal for the $150, but Robbie Munn, who made the big donation, asked me to increase it. She didn't want to discourage others from contributing if I made my goal so easily and quickly. Hows that! I increased it to $500, and should have that by tonight. I am only $25.00 away! Yippppeee!

edited to add: Nik will be having a new address in November so can't get anything mailed until then. Which is really difficult for me to hold off on.. its my mission in life to send him goodies ..can't have him doing without!

JUST FOR A LAUGH TODAY!!! Not talking SERIOUS politics!

Are you Democrat, Republican, or Texan?
The answer can be found by posing the following question:

You’re walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises the knife and charges at you. You are carrying a Glock cal 40 and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.

What do you do?

Democrat’s Answer:

Well, that’s not enough information to answer the question!

Does the man look poor, or oppressed?

Have I ever done anything to him that would provoke him to attack?

Could we run away?

What does my wife think?

What about the kids?

Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?

What does the law say about this situation?

Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it?

Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?

Is it possible he’d be happy with just killing me?

Does he definitely want to kill me or would he be content just to wound me?

If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?

Should I call 9-1-1?

Why is this street so deserted?

Maybe we need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day, and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.

This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for few days and try to come to a consensus.

Republican’s Answer:

BANG!

Texan’s Answer:

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click..... (sounds of reloading).

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click

Daughter: "Nice grouping, Daddy! Were those the Winchester Silver Tips or Hollow Points?

Son: Can I shoot the next one?

Wife: You ain’t taking that to the taxidermist!

Ohohoh!! I always wondered what it would look like when you exceeded the fund raising goal! Way to go Cyndi!! The top is blowing right off the little thermometer thingy! So cool!
For any of you who still want to contribute, feel more than free!! Just because we have blown up a thermometer, does not mean we have to stop!!
