My father worked for Hudson's department store and when they were bought out by Dayton's department store in the Twin Cities, Dad got transferred. I was 15 and in the middle of my sophomore year at Bentley. I hated Minnesota the first few years we lived there. The people were a lot different than those I'd grown up with - a lot more white collar and wealth. The school had no school spirit - not even a student council. I sang in their concert choir - but every single day I wished it was Bentley's concert choir I was singing with. But I made it through and took a year off of school before going to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to study radio/tv journalism. I changed my major to advertising and transferred to the University of Minnesota just in time for my father to get transferred again to Kansas City. So I got my bachelor's at Minnesota and headed south to be closer to my family.
I've been here in this too hot, too cold, landlocked, slightly southern, fairly redneck city since 1979. I've raised my sons here and I guess it's as much home as any place. I have many hobbies, some I need to get back to doing. I have sung in several church choirs and worked at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival for over 20 years, first as a performer manager, then as part of a stage act called MentalPause, Hot Flash Wenches, and finally as a volunteer at the front gate greeting and entertaining patrons. I retired from that when my health issues became a barrier to standing for long periods of time and being in the heat. But I made some good friends and had a great time.
I lost my father a week shy of his 91st birthday in 2022, but my mother is still alive and kicking, taking care of my stepfather and a home. She'll be 92 in July and is still my biggest hero and the person I love the most. I'm very blessed.
I am currently working on my membership in Daughters of the American Revolution, cheered on by my cousin who has been a member for years, although we do not share the same patriot. It is a lot of fun to research my family genealogy and to make new friends.
I keep promising myself that I'm going to do a massive purge of all of the junk I've accumulated over a lifetime, but my motivation seems to be lacking. LOL
So that's about it for me, a whole lifetime has gone by in a flash. I don't know how I got this old so quickly. I'm grateful for all the experiences I've had and a loving family and friends.
