After high school I was an exchange student in Barcelona, Spain. I then attended Mankato State for a BS in Spanish and a teaching license. I taught Spanish in Albert Lea. I earned a Masters degree in educational leadership from Southwest State University. I went on to earn a K-12 administration license from St. Mary's University. I am now the principal of Benson High School in Benson, Minnesota.
I remember walking to Roosevelt one early Spring morning. I slipped and fell into a puddle of muddy water. I went back home where I just decided to sleep in; certainly a 3rd grader's prerogative.
Unbeknownst to me, my father wasn’t at work that day. After I told him what had happened, he made me get dressed and brought me to school. Everyone was in the middle of an art project. I started in and Mrs. Breyer quietly knelt next to me. “Why were you late?” she inquired. I had an infallible story all worked out. Confidently, I informed her, “I superglued my eyes shut and had to be taken to the doctor to have them surgically opened.” I remember that she simply nodded and gave me an “ahh”. She simply walked away as I worked my muddy little cube of clay.
