Paul was one of my first close friends. I remember that it always seemed like life was hitting him with one major trial after another: parents' divorce; no money; diabetes in 2nd grade; the list can go on and on. Paul, however, was always in a cheerful mood and was a trustworthy friend.
Today, I work closely with high school children and I think of Paul a lot. There are a lot of students who remind me of him. They are the ones that, despite poor domestic situations and all of the other obstacles life has set before them, are optimistic, positive, and cheerful.

I was in Germany when I heard about Paul, and all the memories came flooding back. I will always remember him and admire his upbeat outlook on life.
