Cherryl Mugge (Smith)

Cherryl Ann Mugge Smith, 77, passed away unexpectedly due to complications of coronary disease on August 27, 2022, in Tucson, AZ.

Cherryl was born on November 17, 1944, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to DeArve and Grace Mugge. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1962. After attending Marshalltown Community College for two years, Cherryl completed her BA at the University of Iowa in 1966. She was a devoted Hawkeye fan.

Cherryl married Craig Smith in 1966 and moved to Endicott, NY, where her son, Jeffrey Marshall Smith, was born. She completed a Master’s degree in Accounting at SUNY Binghamton in 1975.

After divorcing, she retired from accounting, and subsequently lived in New York City, Washington DC and Atlanta, eventually settling in Tucson. Throughout the years, she donated her time to volunteer work, including at the 1996 Olympics, presidential campaigns and numerous local events.

Cherryl kept all her family members close. Even in later years, she was fond of driving her yellow Honda Fit to both US coasts and Iowa to see family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Jeff, his wife, Elaine, and three grandchildren: Brenden, Cameron and Marius. Also surviving are her sister, Myrian, of Dallas, TX, her brother, Marshall and sister-in-law Emily, of Westerly, RI, and their families.

Cherryl – Mom – Grandma Cher, we dearly miss your love, your kindness and your caring thoughtfulness. We’ll always think of you with fondness, and especially with every single cat we see.
