WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND

It took the Coles County Chapter almost three years (1967-1970) in order to acquire enough members to be chartered by the Barbershop Harmony Society (then the SPEBSQSA).  Through the encouragement and support of men from the Decatur Chapter, we finally made it.  We have been official since July, 1970.  Ironically, Jeff Bowyer, a past CCC President and now the Executive VP for the Illinois District went to Decatur last Saturday night and “installed” their new officers.  One of them is Bob Hedgcock (his brother was a charter member of CCC) who started his barbershopping in Champaign...a long time ago.  He sings with Decatur and for many years has made the long weekly commute to St. Charles, MO to sing with AOH.  He will receive his 50 year pin this summer in Portland and is now the VP for Music and Performance for the Decatur Chorus.

DID YOU KNOW THAT.......

Marsha Bowyer has created/made three beautiful “glass pieces” that in the past three years have been raffled off at the Illinois District Convention, earning nearly $4,000 to benefit the IDAH program.  She’s at it again and soon you’ll see a photo of her fourth creation.  You’ll have an opportunity to purchase tickets and help the District with financial responsibilities.  The drawing will be held March 31st in Peoria, but you don’t have to be present to win.

Tim Woodall will be judging and participating in the Carolina Harmony Brigade this coming weekend in Southern Pines, NC.  He attended the Indiana Brigade (Indianapolis) in 2010 and fell in love with the concept of 150 committed singers, joining together for a weekend (after having memorized a dozen songs).  There are “Brigades” springing up all over the country, but the Carolina Brigade is one of the oldest, celebrating its 20th anniversary.

This picture is three or four years old...Tim has long since become a Certified Singing Judge and a good one.

The Fourfront Quartet (Indiana/Ohio) will be featured at the 7 PM IDAH Barbershop Extravaganza Show held in Champaign, IL (Faith United Methodist Church) on Saturday, March 3rd.  Fourfront placed 6th in the International Contest (averaged 85 points per song) last summer in Kansas City.  Tickets are $10.  Watch this newsletter for more details as how to purchase tickets.  Those who are IDAH (all day school) participants, get in free of charge.

Sherry Bagby and Marsha Bowyer (wives of Illinois District President and Executive VP, respectively) are in the initial stages of planning and Illinois District Recipe Book.  Proceeds from its sale would benefit the district.
Right now, they are trying to generate interest in the projects.  Men...be sure to pass this on to your wives or significant others.  Here is all you have to do..send an email to bowyersing@live.com  It should include: the recipe, your name, your chapter affiliation and a phone number (email address would be helpful as well).  For those who don’t have email, send the above information to Marsha Bowyer  212 Chaise Lane, Arthur, IL 61911

He may not feel like smiling this much next Tuesday night, for Rich Helton will only have had 24 hours of recovery from hip replacement surgery (next Monday).  However, those who know how tough he is, will be quick to observe that his face will never change....that smile is built in.  Bruce Condill, who is at least 18 inches taller than Rich, is now one month in recovery from the same surgery.  He has volunteered to be the “coach” for Rich.

LAST NIGHT
Two dozen plus two (that’s 26 for baritone math majors) singers turned into military men last night as we jumped on Show and Contest songs.  Looks like we’ve got four (4) quartets all ready to do Singing Valentines on Tuesday February 14th.  Now we need customers who will pay $35 to have a spouse or friend surprised at work or home by a red vested foursome.  Talk it up at work, church and with other friends.   The IDAH attendee list is growing.  As of right now, we’ve already got 15 planning to attend, and the Registration plan has yet to be completed.

New Membership VP, Ron Hawkins has us focused on the goal of 12 new members in 2012.  We’ve had one guest in January and another prospect is to visit next Tuesday night.  January is the time to invite guests, so they have a fighting chance to learn songs inorder to perform with us later this spring.  How about bringing at least one guest next week?

Harold Hill is well known as the guy who walked in to River City and ended up directing the town band.  Anthony Morrison joined us while in high school (he is an excellent singer/musician) but now as he completes his first semester as an EIU college student, he finds his schedule is really FULL.  But last night, he made it to our meeting and of course, just like Harold Hill, he ended up directing (not the band ) but some CCC friends in our closing “Keep the Whole World Singing”

All a Matter of Taste
One day a Park Ranger was walking through the woods, when he spied a primitive-looking guy squatting next to a small fire cooking a meal on a short stick. Visiting with him, the Ranger found that the man had been living on his own in the woods for over twenty years, totally separated from civilization, and the Ranger was the first human he’d seen in all that time. The Ranger casually asked the hermit what he was cooking. The man smiled and said, “Oh, one of my very favorite foods, peregrine falcon. I eat it every chance I get.”

The Ranger got very excited, and told him that the peregrine falcon was an endangered species, illegal to kill and eat, and as a Park Ranger, he must arrest him. The hermit begged the Ranger not to turn him in, as he could not survive in civilized society, let alone in a prison. The Ranger finally relented with a stern warning that the hermit never harm another peregrine falcon, to which the hermit agreed. As the Ranger was leaving, his curiosity finally overcame him. “I’ve got to know,” he asked, “what does a peregrine falcon taste like?” “It’s hard to say,” said the hermit, “sort of in-between a spotted owl and a bald eagle.”
