THOUGHT FOR CONSIDERATION

Many people feel so pressured

by the expectations of others

that it causes them to be frustrated,

miserable and confused

about what they should do.

But there is a way to live a simple,

joy-filled, peaceful life,

and the key is

learning how to be led by the Holy Spirit,

not the traditions or expectations of man.

~Joyce Meyer~

THOUGHT FOR CONSIDERATION

If we only wanted to be happy,

it would be easy;

but we want to be happier than other people,

and that is almost always difficult,

since we think them happier than they are.

Happy Fourth everyone! Kenneth your quote for today was so appropriate. I noticed that we're about as happy as we choose to be. Again thanks for the production of this newsletter. Take care and be safe. Blue

“God has use for all the old people. There is a place for people 65 and older

that no other age group can fit. We have nothing to lose. Some of us have a

couple pennies. We can go out now and really be revolutionaries“. ~Ruby Dee~

Took a page from the notebook of Vickie Marshall the other day. If you

recall, she volunteered to participate in clinical trials for the Covid-19 vaccine.

I recall the following recording from WREG Channel 3 - The research project

sponsored by Pfizer aimed at finding a COVID-19 vaccine, but they are looking

for minorities to take part in the clinical trial. Memphian Vickie Hollis is

taking part in a clinical trial at CNS. But Hollis is one of a small number of

minorities taking part in the study. “Well, I just want to see a cure and unless

they do a study then they can’t find a cure,” Hollis. .

Initially, I said "God Bless You" Vickie for your courage and decision to

participate. Presently, I live in a community full of biomedical and clinical

research companies, but I'd never concluded that I wanted to participate in

any type of trial. Financial compensation here is always phenomenal, if that's

your incentive, but overall it wasn't something I was comfortable with. Vickie

clearly stated what her incentive was and it was extremely commendable

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill reached out to me via my

Primary Care Physician to participate in a study for a quantitative MRI study

of cerebral penetrating artery alterations in patients with diabetes’s at high

risk. The purpose of the research study was to use a high resolution MRI called

7T MRI scanner to understand the qualities of arteries that penetrate into

the deeper parts of the brain in patients with diabetes. Because I'm not

claustrophobic, and a Type II diabetic, it was a no brainer for me. As it was

with Vicki, the results are designed to obtain new knowledge with hopes of

helping people in the future. Sherri Shepherd once stated "I am a type-2

diabetic, and they took me off medication simply because I ate right and

exercised".

Diabetes is not like a cancer, where you go in for chemo and radiation. You

can change a lot through a basic changing of habits....Mary Tyler Moore tells

us that diabetes is an all-too-personal time bomb which can go off today,

tomorrow, next year, or 10 years from now - a time bomb affecting millions

like me and the children here today.....Bryan Adams says trying to manage

diabetes is hard because if you don't, there are consequences you'll have to

deal with later in life....

I acknowledge all of this to realize that many of the Class Of 1970 are

diabetics and some of us have our situation under control. As retires, we can

participate in clinical studies related to our condition. If you're impassioned,

seek out local community studies, which may benefit your grandchildren and

great grandchildren in the future. We can become a change agent like Vickie.

The greatest benefit that I'll receive through this participation is this, should

there be a brain tumor or other possible medical findings after review by a

qualified neuro-radiologist, I'll be notified immediately....like I said it was a no

brainer!....

There's no cure for diabetes, but we can make changes in our personal lives

to make us less vulnerable. Chamath Palihapitiya stated “We need to go after

cancer, diabetes, climate change, the substantive problems of the world that, if

were solved, would create immense wealth and opportunity that would

cascade across countries“.....stay safe my friends and monitor your health

conditions....

Red Skelton’s Commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance

When I was a small boy in Vincennes, Indiana, I heard, I think, one of the most outstanding speeches I ever heard in my life. I think it compares with the Sermon on the MountLincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and Socrates’ Speech to the Students.

We had just finished reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and he [Mr. Lasswell, the Principal of Vincennes High School] called us all together, and he says, “Uh, boys and girls, I have been listening to you recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester, and it seems that it has become monotonous to you. Or, could it be, you do not understand the meaning of each word? If I may, I would like to recite the pledge, and give you a definition for each word:

I -- Me; an individual; a committee of one.

Pledge -- Dedicate all of my worldly good to give without self-pity.

Allegiance -- My love and my devotion.

To the Flag -- Our standard. “Old Glory”; a symbol of courage. And wherever she waves, there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts “Freedom is everybody's job.”

of the United -- That means we have all come together.

States -- Individual communities that have united into 48 great states; 48 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose; all divided by imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common cause, and that’s love of country --

Of America.

And to the Republic -- A Republic: a sovereign state in which power is invested into the representatives chosen by the people to govern; and the government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

For which it stands

One Nation -- Meaning "so blessed by God."

[Under God]1

Indivisible -- Incapable of being divided.

With Liberty -- Which is freedom; the right of power for one to live his own life without fears, threats, or any sort of retaliation.

And Justice -- The principle and qualities of dealing fairly with others.

For All -- For All. That means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.

Now let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:

I pledge allegiance
to the Flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic, for which it stands;
one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: Under God

BIRTHDAY GREEETINGS

TO

JULY BIRTHDAY EXTRAVANZA

MEMBERS

I believe that whatever comes at a particular time is a

blessing from God. Each one of us has our own evolution of life,

and each one of us goes through different tests which are unique

and challenging. But certain things are common. And we do

learn things from each other's experience. On a spiritual

journey, we all have the same destination.

~A. R. Rahman~

Birthday greetings to each classmate born during the month

of July. From A to O, beginning with Amelia and ending with

Orva, the individuals celebrating birthdays this month truly

represent an extravagant collective of unique, inspirational and

spiritual individuals. At this moment, you’re free to Laugh Out

Loud, should you agree or disagree!!!…

As quoted, each of us has had our own evolution of life and

have undergone different aspects of life. One of our innocent

commonalities was not knowing close friends and associates

were born on the same day. Having become part of the Baby

Boomer Generation, the Chinese Zodiac, nine months prior

(October 1, 1951) was a Rabbit. That might explain why two were

born on the eleventh, two on the fourteenth, two on the twenty-

seventh and three on the thirty-first...just saying angelwink..lol…

Throughout our friendships and associations, we’ve learned

things from each other’s experiences. Presently, we are indeed

on a spiritual journey and we all are heading toward the same

destination.

As Rahman has said, “I believe that whatever comes at a

particular time is a blessing from God”. Today Amelia, may you

enjoy the continued blessings of mercy and grace which have

been embracing your days during our evolution of life.

May you have a Cal Harris Jr type of day. Celebrate this

day on your “Time Line” with your family and selected

friends...stay uniquely yourself and enjoy your blessings…be

safe my friend….

Every birthday is a gift.

Every day is a gift.

~Aretha Franklin~

THOUGHT FOR CONSIDERATION

Sometimes in life God tells us to be still.

We do not always understand

what he is trying to show us,

but He always has an ultimate plan.

The most valuable lesson I've learned

throughout this whole process

is to trust His timing

and remain confident in the fact

that God will always prevail.

Live by this credo:

have a little laugh at life

and look around you

for happiness instead of sadness.

Laughter has always brought me out of unhappy situations.

~Red Skelton~

Hello Estella and every classmate! Believe it or not, I received

a request from a classmate to send them a copy of Red's

commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance. Your post, initiated a

desire to share the commentary with their grandkids. Most of us

growing up, probably remember him as "Clem Kadiddlehopper

or Freddie the Free-Loader". While looking for the written copy

of your exact post, I found at least two YouTube videos. One

ended with a political argument to protect the second

admendment. It's the final words of Red from the second video

attached that won my vote.

We all used to say the pledge in elementary school, before

prayer was removed as part of our morning devotion. Red's final

words from the video are,"Wouldn't it be a pity, if

someone said, that is a prayer...and that would be

eliminated from schools too....I sent our classmate a copy

of the written message and the video...After viewing the video, I

hope that you'll agree, the ending words of Red, helps us all to

further understand your sharing on the website....Thank you for

breaking the silence once again and please continue your fervent

prayers for Memphis and your classmates....

THOUGHT FOR CONSIDERATION

Telling us to obey instinct is like telling us to obey 'people.'

My passion for gardening may strike some as selfish,

or merely an act of resignation

in the face of overwhelming problems

that beset the world.

It is neither.

I have found that each garden

a microcosm of a just and beautiful society.

THOUGHT FOR CONSIDERATION

Wellness is associated with happiness.

When you're happy,

you're feeling good in your mind and body.

That ties into being healthy,

eating well,

and exercising regularly.

It also ties into being excited about things

- like getting up in the morning

and having a healthy breakfast.

Good Morning to All!

I am looking at The Esquire Garden and trying to figure out how I can enjoy those wonderful vegetables without the toil!  I am not an outdoor person, but this may lead me to think about starting a small garden next year.

Looking at the purple hull peas in the photograph and the fact that I cooked frozen purple hull peas this week (rare event because I don't see them in stores) took me back down Memory Lane. Please indulge me.

My mother would buy big bags of purple hull peas during the summer and we had to shell them. My sisters and I would sit on our porch or steps with our pans and shell peas for days. I hated the green ones because they were hard to get open. I always picked out the purple ones first to shell.

We were at our usual task the summer before 10th grade. Three or four of the neighborhood boys came by, saw us, and asked if they could help. My mother gave them pans and they joined in.  It helped us, but the real reason they wanted to help was to get a chance to come on our porch and talk to us!  smiley

Be Blessed Everyone.

Margie

Many thanks to Eugene Grayer for his assistance with

determining the wellbeing of Linda Brown. For others who

became concerned, her sails have returned to a safe harbor,

however prayers for her and family members remain a constant

request.

Margie, purple hull peas are one of my favorites and easy to

grow. Until you make your decision, all you'll need are a few 5

gallon buckets or large flower pots to get started. Otherwise, you

may find everything at the Mauldin Farmers Market each

Tuesday. You're absolutely right, the purple hulls are much

easier to shell. My grandmother had us doing the labor, but the

meals were fantastic...so grateful that the post caused you to

smile and reminiscence....stay safe my friends....
