In Memory

George Hill Lewis

December 6, 1948 - August 19, 2005

George Hill Lewis III died at Memorial Hospital, Easton, MD, on August 19, 2005. He was 56 years old. He spent most of his childhood in Short Hills, NJ.  George served in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in Vietnam in 1968.  He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

He attended Northeast Louisiana State University and Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, where he received his Bachelors in Business Administration, and later earned his Masters Degree in Hospital Administration from The University of Northern Colorado. George was an auditor for the Bank of Alaska in Anchorage; he also developed banking programs for the hearing impaired. He later worked in civil service as a management analyst at Fort Huachuca, AZ, Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC, and West Point Military Academy in New York, NY.

George loved to read, and he was particularly interested in current events and the news, enjoyed traveling, especially in his RV, and made many trips throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He often taught others how to use sign language. George was passionate about his sponsorship of children in Brazil and Taiwan through the Christian Children's Fund. He devotedly maintained contact with old friends, colleagues and comrades, in particular his fellow combat Veterans from the 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry, with whom he fought in the Battle of Tan Hiep and shared in the Valorous Unit Award.

All who knew George knew him as a gentle person with a quiet disposition. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and he loved a good joke. He was always generous, yet sincere, with compliments for others, and he truly enjoyed meaningful conversation. George knew no strangers.

His wife, Patricia, and his children, Patrick, Macon and Emily, survived George. His mother, Mrs. George Hill Lewis Jr., his brother, Raine Lewis, and his sisters, Macon Basinger and Sarah Tozier, and a number of nieces and nephews also survived him.  His father and his brother, Michael, preceded George in death.
