Remember Angelo from Mr. Ristvedt's science class in 7th grade - they had a nice market on broadway near where the river always flooded- just north of the overpass. He died before his time - not sure why - lots of potential lost when that happens.
Angelo and I started first grade together at McKinley elementary school and subsequently were classmates all through high school. We became good friends since his family's grocery store, "Cut Rate Grocery" was located near my home. I was always being sent to the store to pick up something for my Grandmother and would usually visit with Angelo while I was waiting for the butcher or one of the older brothers to find what I had been sent after. We remained good friends all through school.
I left North Dakota in 1967, moved to Georgia with my husband. I was able to travel back to Minot in 1969 to visit my folks, for the 10 year reunion (obviously 1971), when my grandmother passed in 1973 and when my grandfather passed in 1978. Each time I came home, I looked up Angelo and made a point to see him. He would update me on friends from school - who was where, who married who, and similar topics of mutual interest.
After the father of my children died in June, 1988, I received a call from a recruiter. This call resulted in a job offer in Bismarck. This company moved me in March of 1989. Not long after arriving in Bismarck, I heard thru friends that Angelo was gravely ill but no one had any details. I made arrangements within a few weeks to travel to Minot with my daughter and went to his house. He was home and I had the opportunity to meet his two daughters and visit with him for a short while. He shared with me that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
I had occasions to visit Minot a couple of times before moving to Virginia in 1992 and again in 2004 when my current husband and I traveled out West. Somehow it didn't seem the same knowing that Angelo wouldn't be there. I truly considered him a lifetime friend.
On most of my yearly summer trips back to Minot with my children, and whoever else accompanied us, or met us there, I would often run into Angelo. We would go to dinner at the Riverside, and he would join us, with one or more of my sisters, and we had a fun time, laughing, catching up, as well as remembering. He was the life of the dinner, for sure. I would find him on Main Street, or at Best Western Inn, or at the Fair. He had the greatest smile, and the biggest hugs.
