In Memory

John Douglas Reid

Just received this in an email through the church I attend.  I didn't know he was a Glenforest teacher but thought I'd share this through the website for any of you who knew him.

I worked with John in the Geography Department from the early years till 1974. He was a terrific teacher who used humour and laughter as a way of getting his point across to students. As a member of his department I enjoyed coming to work everyday in a highly professional atmosphere that he established for all his teachers. John you will be missed by so many of the students and staff you came in contact with----Ron McCleary

John was my department head for five years in the late 1980's.
He was a great role model for myself and his students.

Mr. Reid was a wonderful teacher who gave his students so much - including an amazing trip on the Polar Bear Express to Moosonee - he helped us appreciate the world more deeply from urban delights to farmland to the stark beauty of the North.

And on our Northern Ontario trip he even helped me arrange to have a short meeting with my Aunt and cousin in Kirkland Lake !

Thank you Mr Reid for enriching my life and the lives of many many students.

Mr Reid was the main reason why I became a teacher.  He made learning so easy and effortless.  So many of the people from our class of 76 who took Geology went on to actually work in the industry and were all the better for their time spent in his classes.

I so wish I had come back to see you before you retired.  You were my favourite teacher.  I loved how you taught me to pay attention to the world around me not just the rocks at my feet.  I remember a field trip to Baby Point and other neighbourhoods in Toronto.  You knew so much, you had prepared so much, you were a dedicated teacher, whether or not your students knew it at the time they were giving you greif.

Thank you for being there for us all. . .

Mr. Reid taught me Geography and Geology.  I agree wholeheartedly with previous comments about his professionalism.  You could tell he loved what he taught and imparted that love to his students.  To this day, if I see a geological formation, I think of him and our grade 12 Geology field trips and am sure he would add this formation to the tour.  He was one of my favourites and a man after my own heart in needing/wanting those Geology specimen boxes to be in proper order....lol..

I remember coming back to school after I had had my first child and he laughingly said, "Get out of here!  Now you are really making me feel old!"  We had a great chat and caught up with each other.

RIP my dear friend.

I recently joined the Glenfoerest site and read about Mr. Reid’s passing. He was an inspiration to me. His love for Geology showed me I could excell in the field of Geology. I successfully completed my BSc. in Geology, was able to work as an Environmetal Geologist and I now teach Geology. Rest in peace Mr. Reid, you were an amazing teacher.
