Roz Walling-Gumaer

 

 

 

Rosalind Walling Gumaer passed away at home in Mountainair, New Mexico surrounded by her family on May 18, 2020.  Roz was born on October 16, 1943 to Cheves and Jane Walling in Montclair, New Jersey, the second of five children.  She primarily grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, graduating from Montclair High School in 1961. Roz married Stephen M. Holton in 1963, and they were the parents of two sons, Stephen M. and Andrew T. Holton.  Though divorced in 1979.  Roz and Steve worked together to raise their two boys.  Roz married William Gumaer, her beloved husband, in Elizaville, NY in 1988.  Their union brought them their daughter Simona G. O’Flaherty.

 

Rosalind loved to travel and lived in many places during her lifetime including Bellingham, WA, Amsterdam, Holland, London, England, Ossining, NY, Elizaville, NY, Stuyvesant Falls, NY and finally in Mountainair, NM.  She was a licensed social worker having received her Bachelors from the University of California-Berkley in Anthropology in July 1965 and her MA in Social Work from NYU in June 1975.  She worked in a variety of places in New York from the late 1970s, until retiring from private practice in 2009.  During this period, she volunteered in local politics, and helped her husband with his dairy, Gumaer Farms.  After moving to Mountainair in 2010, she resumed her social work practice focusing on children and volunteered at the local library.  She and her husband Bill spent many enjoyable hours travelling around the Southwest, camping in their RV and hiking in the outdoorsRoz was always busy helping others during her lifetime and trying to improve the conditions of people wherever she lived.  She loved being with people and traveling as much as possible, both within and outside of the US.  She was an amazing mother, and she loved all her children and grandchildren, as well as the members of her larger extended family.

 

Roz is survived by her husband, William Gumaer, of Mountainair, New Mexico, her sons, Stephen M.  Holton, of Papillion, NE and Andrew T. Holton, of Elizaville, NY, and her daughter, Simona, and her husband,  Brendan O’Flaherty, of Colorado Springs, CO, as well as her four grandchildren,  Tristan, Ali, Michael and Keane and one great grandchild., Rowan.  Surviving family members include her three sisters, Hazel Nourse and her husband, David, of Westborough, MA, Janie Jones, of San Diego, CA, and Barbara Frank of, Cedar City, UT, and her brother, Cheves H. Walling and his wife Stella, of Rindge, NH as well as a number of nieces and nephews.  No services are planned at this time.  If you wish to make a donation in her memory, consider Planned Parenthood or a Democratic political candidate

Lynne Bowie (Dillingham)

Roz was a cheerful and adventurous friend despite the back problems that plagued her during high school. She brimmed with ideas and always was ready to discuss whatever book she was reading.  She was an excellent bridge player and her use of strategy mirrored the way she lived her life.  She will be missed.

It sounds like Roz had an amazing life and as always so nice to many.May her family and friends remember all the wonderful times and may she rest in peace.
