Kate Young (Hewitt)

Kate Elizabeth Young Hewitt died on March 6, 2025 in Wiscasset, Maine.
Born in Montclair on July 24, 1943 to Archer E. and Elizabeth (Nostrand) Young, the family, including her younger sister, Jane A. Young (1949-1992), lived at 109 Gordonhurst Avenue.
Kate attended Watchung School, Mount Hebron Junior High and Montclair High School, Class of1961. She went on to receive her B.S. in education from Wheelock College in Boston, MA and taughtin several NJ locations.At the end of her sophomore year in college, her mother Elizabeth, who had been a teacher at HillsideSchool from 1933-1943, passed away and her father later remarried. Mr. Archer Young was anengineer with American Sugar Refining Company, producers of Domino Sugar products.
Kate married John “Jack” Peter Hewitt on July 8, 1967 in St. Luke's Church in Montclair. The Hewittslived in Wharton and Chatham and in 1979 they purchased a 1774 house on Rt. 15 in Sparta which theylovingly restored. After living in the Sparta area, in the 1990s Kate and Jack moved to Youngs PointRoad in Wiscasset, Maine.
Kate was known for her love of playing bridge and doing needlework, both needlepoint and
embroidery, especially counted cross stitch. Jack was a conservationist and skilled woodworker.
Together they created a “Memories Casket,” a creation going back to the 1600s which is a decorative box used to store and transport sewing and needlecraft supplies. It was featured and displayed in theirarea. On the front left panel of the embroidered sides she featured the Israel Crane House, Montclair, in honor of her hometown. In recent years Kate suffered from declining health and mobility issues. Kate will be buried at a laterdate in New York. Jack survives her. Kate and Jack did not have children but Kateleaves many friends to remember her fondly.

I remember Kate very well from our days at Watchung through MHS. A very sweet girl, quiet and friendly. She will be missed by her many friends. RIP, Kate.

So sorry to hear about Kate...we saw she and her husband Jack several times up here in Maine.She did amazing needles work and at one time had a shop in NJ . I think in the Sparta,NJ area. I met Kate at Mt Hebron  and I remember being involved in Mtc. Girls club. Always so nice . May she rest in peace.
