JayWestfall, 60, of Montclair, died on Friday, Oct. 17, at his home.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9, 3 p.m., at Central Presbyterian Church, 46
Park St.
Mr. Westfall was born in Montclair, and graduated fromMontclair High School. A cum laude
graduate of Princeton University in 1966, Mr. Westfall contributed his time and talents to the
youth sports programs in Montclair.
After years of coaching baseball, he served as commissioner of Junior Baseball, training new
managers and running baseball clinics. He also coached soccer and football, serving also as a
game official. He was vice president of the Montclair Cobra football program until his death.
After a career in educational and legal publishing, Mr. Westfall continued his editing and writing
on a freelance basis. He worked mostly on the memoirs of his friend and neighbor, Fred Ruccio,
and was also the editor of ?The Glory Years: The Winning Tradition of Montclair Football? by
Robin Hodgson.
Volunteering his services to Montclair civic groups, Mr. Westfall was on the Hollow Day Care
Center Board. He also served on the Board of Adjustment and was a member of the
Landlord/Tenant Committee. At the time of Mr. Westfall?s death, he was transcribing into book
form the diary of his great-grandfather, a CivilWar battlefield doctor.
Mr. Westfall is survived by his sister, Carol, ofWoodbury.
