i think we are seeing how awesomely racist America really is. pat robertson and paul shirley's comments echo the sentiments of millions of americans ignorance and arrogance in what they feel as their superiority. haitians, regardless of their race (because there are white haitians too) religious preference (the vast majority are catholic) or socioeconomic status are still children of God and human beings and as such deserve our benevolence, assistance, and earnest prayers when disasters strike. they did not ask the earth to move. how dare we judge them?
i could not imagine what i would do if my world came crashing down around me. if all i'd ever known were reduced to rubble in a matter of minutes. what i do know for certain is that i would definitely want someone to help me, not for imperialistic gain or to further thier own personal agenda, but out of a genuine desire to help someone in need.
in situations like this, i cannot help but be reminded of hurricane katrina and the devastation that followed. the flooding and search and rescue efforts. i am also reminded of the media attention on the superdome, the convention center and the areas of commerce where people, in utter lack, looted for clean dry clothes, shoes, food, water, diapers, you know, the things we take for granted and were chased with guns. white people looted too, but it was cool. same act. different opinion.
ask yourself this question; if we were at the high school and a storm came trapping us in one square mile without food, water, clothes, or any chance of assistance from the outside, how long would you sit there in that school hungry, wet, dirty and stank before harvey's, cvs, barkers and dollar general became simply a means to an end?
