Update: Last fall I was inquiring about heat pumps. After careful research we decided to have two installed. We needed two because of the size of our house. They pull heat out of the air and move it indoors, even when it is cold outside. (I'm not sure how it really works but it does.) When the temperature drops below 26 degrees it automatically kicks on our regular heating units. I'm happy to announce that our gas bill, that was averaging $300 to $400 a month last winter, has dropped to $68 in December and $225 in January.(It was really cold in January) Our electric bill doubled but we haven't had a bill over $150.00. Overall the heat pumps have saved us over $100 per month and we have seen a reduction in total utility cost between 35 and 40 percent. If your central air units go out, I would recommend replacing them with heat pumps. This way they can serve as heat and air for the same money as a new air unit and they will eventually pay for themselves.
