Long time Scott Valley resident, Nadja Paula Fechter, age 68, died at her Greenview home surrounded by her husband and daughters on May 23, 2015, after a valiant battle with a rare bone marrow/leukemia disorder.
Everyone who knew Nadja would describe her as a thoughtful, giving, wonderful person. She was a friendly, fun-loving person and a lover of life. She never met a stranger. She had a great sense of humor and was always honest, both in terms of integrity and letting others know what she thought.
Born in Napa, California on October 15, 1946, Nadja graduated from Napa High in 1964. She met her future husband Mel that same year while watching the World Series on TV at the Napa College student union. The St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees were playing.
Nadja, Mel and their daughters Hilary and Tiffany moved from the Napa Valley to Siskiyou County in 1977. Nadja retired as the Siskiyou County payroll supervisor in 1995.
Known by all as an avid sports fan, Nadja loved the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. She attended her first Giants game in 1959 at the old Seals Stadium in San Francisco. She and Mel have been season ticket holders at AT&T Park since its 2000 opening. The Giants organization strongly supported Nadja during her illness of nearly two years.
From a young age Nadja loved helping animals, both wild and domestic. She made donations to benefit animal welfare causes throughout her life. She took care of strays and took them in if she could. Her daughters always said that if there is such a thing as reincarnation, they’d want to come back as one of her pets.
Nadja, is survived by Mel, her best friend and husband of 47 years, daughters Hilary Eastman [Doug] and grandson Hayden of London, England, daughter Tiffany Fechter of San Francisco, her sister Vanessa Bitcon of Foresthill, CA, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, as well as Hobbs, her cat.
Nadja was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Cece Hogberg of Napa.
At Nadja’s request there will be no services. In memory of Nadja, please make a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Madrone Hospice in Yreka, Rescue Ranch in Yreka, Siskiyou Humane Society in Mt. Shasta, or a charity of your choice.

I am so sorry Nadja has passed. She fought a courageous battle for the last year or so. Be brave Mel, Tiffany and Hilary. I know you all fought the battle with and for her. I will miss Nadja.

Nadja was a wonderful human being - she was, indeed, always honest with everyone - I admired her very much for that quality. Some of us learned to couch our feelings and reactions to avoid being judged, but she was never concerned about that. Her integrity and her beautiful smile will be remembered always.
