Hey Judy Bob, so glad for your grandson!  PRAISE THE LORD!!!!

MISS EBARB married Ken Durr, business professor at NSU.  She went from NHS to NSC to teach Home Ec. and then went to Monroe, NLU.  From there she went to Nacogdoches, TX to Stephen F. Austin as Home Ec. Director.  Now she is retired.  She invited ME to her super retirement dinner at the Fredona Hotel there.  It was beautiful with great food.  I was her only high school student that was invited, I felt SO HONORED!!

I remember Doug's Restaurant and it's making me hungry.  I loved their chicken fried steak with french fries.  I could eat all of that and not get fat - a different story now.

The Zesto and Bernard's was great.  My mom worked at Bernard's in the office - did the books for Foremost Dairy and Red Ball Freight, ANY OF YOU REMEMBER????

Yes, I remember Pete Smith.  His family would walk past our house on Texas St. and it would scare me to death.  If I was outside, Geneva and I would go in the house.  I really wonder how old Gladys Smith was when she was in school with us.  What was the last grade she attended, anyone out there know?

Janette,

What year Miss Ebarb(Mrs.Durr) teach at Northeast.I wish I had known that I would have looked her up and have gone to see her.Proud of you that you were the only one of her students that was ivited to her retirement party. How did she find you to invite you...
I saw picture of Coach Melder when he attended the Class of 59 reunion whereever that was,Anna sent me some picture,i would not have known him.
I live here in West Monroe ,I could have looked Mrs.Durr up.

I think that Coach Meldon taught Science or Health. I remember having to stand up in front of the class to tell how our blood flows through our body. That was a scary thing for me to do but guess what I did. As for how old Gladys Smith was by looking at her picture she looked to be about 18 years old. I wonder what happen to her.

Gosh Janette, what a beautiful memory you brought back....cheeseburgers/f/f, banana splits, huge cherry cokes and no thoughts of weight gain, blood sugar, hypertension. I'm sure there are a few that still do not have to be concerned. To them I say SALUTE!!!

Gail, you are right. It was almost across the street from Sears.  I worked at Lieber's from the time that was 2 weeks after my 14th. birthday until I was almost 19 1/2 years of age.  Delores Mayeaux and I would go there to eat on Saturday.

See you at Sarah Jo's...................................janette

It was on Church st. across the st. from a pan am station. Just up from the pan am station was the Nakatosh Hotel on Church St. at Front st. Owner of the Hotel was L.H Johnson, Richards grandfather. (Remember Millspaughs drug by the Hotel on Front St.?) Doug's was on Church between Front and Second st. Also there was a barber shop between the Hotel and pan am station. Seems like it was not that long ago I walked those streets but alas, it has been a while.

It was Reid's Barber Shop in the back end of the hotel facing Church St.  Right behind the barber shop was Leary Taylor's Service Station, the service station is now the Merci' Beaucou (sic) Restaurant.  Directly across the street from Leary Taylor's was another service station, I think it was a Cities Service station, can't remember who owned it.  I can remember when the coke machine in Reid's Barber Shop was converted to take a penny because the price of cokes had gone up to 6 cents, and not much later converted again when cokes went to a dime.  The barber shop had a large picture window, you could see traffic as you got your hair cut for 50 cents.  I remember two barbers, Mr. Reid, and an older man, can't remember his name.

Very good Bill....did you know Mr reid was also a excellent carpenter? I remember the older man....he was Freddie Joe  Russels  grandfather. Also a Mr. Miller on the end. That was the flat top era. Not sure about that being a citie service. Gordon Sandlin ran a citie service down the hill from the boy scout hut. Are was it a conoco?

kenneth-i really think you may be wrong a second time {and its only may} i really think {and i have backup} that dougs was on st.denis street. now does anyone remember a cafe out on washington across from the old hospital? this one i don't remember at all.

05/09/10 02:10 PM #125

Kenneth Hatcher

Gail, I do remember a cafe on st.denis, also winbargs store. There was kind of a open alley that ran from st.denis to church. st. That is where doug's was. All I recall on washington was murphy's.

Hmmm, I think you're right there were 3 barbers at Reid's Barber Shop.  And, Gordon Sandlin did have a service station next to the 1st Baptist Church (right below the Troop 64 Boy Scout hut).   The '57 Chinquapin reflects it to be a Conoco service station at 534 2nd St.  There is a Lake Bob Sandlin out in NE Texas.  I've been told that was Gordon Sandlin's brother.  Bob Sandllin was a "politico" out in those parts.

The 1958 Chinquapin has an advertisement for Doug's Steak House at 108 Church St., Douglas Abington, Owner.

Right next to the "old" hospital on Washington was a Billups Service Station, wasn't Murphy's Restaurant right across from the hospital and next to it was Joe Harrel's service station, don't remember what kind it was.  Murphy's was at 1215 Washington according to their ad in the 1958 Chinquapin.  The '57 Chinquapin has Murphy's at 1214 Washington, they must have moved it across the street.  :)

Leary Taylor's Service Station was a "Pan-Am" at 127 Church St.

Remember Curry's Ranch House Restaurant at 801 Texas St.?  I've been unable to find Charles Curry for our reunion.  There are just too many Charles E. Currys in the U.S.  Called the one I found in MS but he says its not him.

Winbarg's ad says "Dispensers of Fine Foods - Sporting Goods.

OK i won't disagree with a chinq.advertisement but maybe there was an entrance to dougs from st denis and i do stand corrected when i am wrong. i still don't remember murphys so to save myself any more embarassment today- color me gone! i do loveseeing what everyone has to say what your thinking.

Gail, I am looking forward to seeing You and Ray. I remember we each had a "50" ford convertible...bet we wish we had it today. Yes, it is fun to kick things around.

Hey Gail, not sayilng you're wrong about that entrance off St. Denis, might have been a rear entry.  Reminds me of a story I read of a "thru hiker" on the Appalachian Trail.  One of the things you do when doing a 5 to 6 month thru hike from Springer  Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katadin in Baxter State Park, Maine is to take a town day about once a week where you walk down into a nearby town to restock your provisions, to get a bath, to sleep in a bed, to eat a gallon of ice cream at a setting and to get a steak.  On the trail you dont get to bathe as frequently as we're used to doing so when you hit town you're pretty ripe.  One hiker, wanting to be considerate of other patrons, walked up to the back door of a restaurant and asked to be served "to go" out the back door.  He was advised they do not serve anyone out their back door.  So, he walked around front, walked in and picked out the centermost table in the dining area.  Bet they were willing to accomodate hikers "out the back door" after that.  :)

Ken, didn't Raymond Sanders also have a '50 Ford, but it was a hard top I think.

I am not sure about the make of the car but early on he was the first to have a sears mo-ped. He picked pecans and paid for it. I had a allstate motorscooter then. Some others I remember that had scooters were jim hollingsworth, melvin jackson and dale deblieux. I have no idea about the ones unacounted for like charles curry but I know you have worked hard looking and on other things to. Thanks again for all you have done!

Important  question, now that we have Dougs partially settled(although I still don't remember it)was the one on hiway one north the Curly Q or Tasty Q ?

Gail Straughan (Barbo)

Raymond, Since I've looked in the Chinquapin I'm going to hold off to see if anyone comes up with an answer.

Kenneth, do you remember the Cushman Eagle motor scooter?  Made to look like a motorcycle.
