Tom, I'd forgotten about the purple wall hangings at the Orpheum, but I do remember the musty smell and those red seats. And I remember the rumor about the unfortunate fifth grader and the balcony. Sandy, I never knew I was sitting on a public health hazard just by going to a show. Your revelation does not surprise me, though. And while I'm on the Orpheum, my favorite snack bar treat was always a Mars bar and a Coke.

Mo, I share in your joyful memory of the intermission films at the Edgewood. In fact - here's a geek admission - several years ago I was browsing a video catalog and came across a video compilation of movie house intermission films. So I bought it. I have 2 hours of intermission shorts strung back to back. The hotdog and bun is there, the dancing soda cups, pictures of some dreadful looking pizza, and public service announcements encouraging people to worship at the church of their choice on Sunday.

Sandy, thanks for bringing up the skating rink. That was probably my second favorite kid activity. I recall that many an adolescent romance began and ended at the skating rink, often on the same evening. I always liked playing "grab a number", though I rarely won. I did win once when I was just learning to skate. The winners had to skate to the center of the rink to claim their prize. It took me about 10 minutes and several falls to get to my prize. I looked more like I was walking downhill on ice wearing hard sole shoes!

OK, so who remembers the name of the skating rink?

Hey Stuart,

I spent most of my Friday nights and Sunday afternoons at the skating rink! (up until age 12) I'm thinking the name of it was GAYWAY. No, that can't be right!!!

I loved the grab a number game too. I thought if only I could win a wooden nickel, my life would be complete.

Terry, you're right, the skating rink was "Gayway." We used to skate in Joplin, at Keeley's, too. It was more "modern," with no poles in the center of the rink, lights that flickered to the music, and (can't believe I'm admitting this) roller disco.

Stuart, I love that you bought the clips of the dancing hot dogs!

Speaking of movies--has anyone else realized that they saw movies they probably wouldn't let their own kids see at that age? There we no ratings then, and my parents just assumed, I guess, that if a movie was shown publicly, it was OK for me to see, so they would drop me off at the multiplex in Joplin and I would see whatever was playing. I saw "Rocky Horror Picture Show" before I had any idea what a transsexual was, I'm pretty sure. :)

The skating rink was awesome! I always think of it when I hear "Cherish" and "Precious and Few" because they were always the songs played for Couple's Skate. Those were the best though I don't think I talked at all to whomever I was skating with. Probably why I remember the songs!

Stuart, I think it is great that you have the clips. I am pretty sure it is shown in the background on the movie "Grease" when John Travolta is "stranded at the drive-in". I remember playing on the playground until the very last possible moment before the next show. It would get so dark when they turned off the area lights and all of the cars looked the same!

I can remember watching "Willard", "Ben", "The Abominable Dr. Phibes", and "Sssssss". For some reason I remember the scary ones the most. I think these movies were at the Orpheum. :)

Great comments about the movies and skating. Sandy, I'm pretty certain my parents were asleep at the switch when it came to monitoring my movie intake. One particular film I saw at the Orpheum left me emotionally scarred for a long time. It was called "The Return of Count Yorga". After seeing it I was so freaked out I had to sleep with the lights on for about a week, and I was convinced that every sound outside my bedroom window was a horde of the living dead ready to burst through and rip out my throat.

Mo, I was present at a screening of Dr. Phibes, too.
That one was kind of weird - I seem to recall a creepy scene with some scorpions, and I think Dr. Phibes fed himself through the back of his neck. My mom did draw the line at "Willard". No child of hers was going to see a movie about a bunch of rats!

Terry, thanks for reminding me about the wooden nickel prize at the Gayway, though I can't remember what was the nickel was for. Was it a prize unto itself, or redeemable for something even better (if that's possible)?

And Tom, I spent many an evening at Goober's Miniature Golf. I'm pretty sure Goober's was the only course in the world where you could shoot an 18, if you just kept the ball in the well-worn ruts.

Out of all the hot spots you guys have mentioned from our childhood, next to Crowder Pool (Crowder Pool Rocked), Goober's Golf was definitely my favorite. It seems like we spent a lot of time there in the summers. I have this memory of my dad driving his red and white chevy pickup down to get us, we would then pile in the back, and he would drop everyone off at their homes. I think it was a nightly ritual for awhile.

Stuart, you would be the only person I know to purchase a 2 hour video of Drive-in Intermission Commercials, and Mo, you would be the only person I know to think that is cool! You are both still so funny! Man, I miss you guys!

The orpheum was awesome, but the smell was just as Tom explained it. My youngest sons bedroom sometimes took on that same aroma after he left his basketball practice socks under his bed for weeks. But, the drive-in! Now, that was a party. As a kid, the playground was so much fun, then as we got older, our parents would let us sit out on the patio and hang out with our friends. Then, right before Carrie and I got our license, her dad, Chester, let us take his dune buggy to the movies. "Mother, Jugs, and Speed" was playing that night I think! I have a lot more memories of the drive-in that I won't mention!

Dru - I miss seeing, too! I remember watching the "Village of the Damned" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", both black and white movies, at your house. They scared me to death but I still watch them when they come on TV.

Hey, did you ever get your popperknockers to Dan?

I always enjoyed Goober's golf though I didn't really have the patience to play it well.

Stuart - I don't care what anyone says. Your 2 hour video of Drive-in Intermission Commercials is awesome! And yes, the Dr. Phibes movie was weird. It is a classic revenge movie that is totally unpredictable. His face was like a mask so he couldn't open his mouth.

Per Ron's request - It's not directly from my collection but it's close enough. Enjoy!

I was most impressed by the gymnastic prowess of the hot dog weenie.

Mo Sneller (Standley)

Thanks, Stuart! You got to love the hot dog! I don't remember it being in color but maybe it was.

Cruising the square was wonderful! I worked at Sonic the summers before my sophmore/junior and junior/senior years. Since Sonic was on the route, I got to see everyone and got paid for it! That was a great job!

Stu,
That was great! So, my question...you have watched this in its entirety for 2 hours? I know we all have seen this one before...Yes, Terry and Mo, I agree, the hotdogs rock!
Thanks for sharing!!

All this talk about the Orpheum is great! Unfortunately, the main thing I remember about it, besides Squint, is going into the bathroom and pouring Cherry Sloe Gin in my Coke!! How old were we then?? WAY too young, I'm sure, but a bunch of us girls would do that... I don't particularly remember watching any movie because like the rest of you, I was too busy wondering if a boy was going to sit by me or who would be sitting in the "lovebirds" seats! LOL!

I REALLY need to get on here sometime and add more pictures from the Friday night mixer. It's very time consuming...I'll get to it soon, I hope!

Stuart, the YouTube video is great. I remember that exact intermission show at the drive in!

08/10/09 09:48 AM #174

Stuart Jones

My my, Cheryl. You never know what's going to come out in the forum. What a naive boy I was. I thought you girls were just happy to be out at the Orpheum!

Ron, I'd never admit to sitting down and watching 2 solid hours of intermission video.

And Dru, all I can say in defense of my choice in video is there's no accounting for taste.

08/10/09 09:20 PM #175

Mo Sneller (Standley)

Cheryl, I never knew! I was very naive, as well. I remember one time after school I was told to tell another they had her Listerene bottle. Not realizing that was code for alcohol, I passed on the message to the individual while she was walking with her father! By the looks on the faces, I knew I had inadvertently messed up! I wasn't sure how!

Mo, was that Me?!

I have not gotten the popperknockers to Dan yet, but I will for sure. My grandkids love to play with them, but I am afraid they may decide to use them as weapons so I have them in a secured location!

Stuart, you have impeccable taste. After all, we were friends, weren't we?!!

I don't have the chance to log on very often because of my schedule, but I love this forum. Keep it coming, you guys!

Ok since we were remembering wonderful things about the Orpheum, I have a little something. One night Sharon and I were visiting the ladies room and had either some swisher sweets or maybe some sloe gin, I can't remember for sure. So Sharon was sitting on the top of the toilet tank. She decide to hop off (maybe we thought someone was coming, I don't remember) and when she did the cover to the top of the tank fell off and broke into 2 pieces. Well we decided to tell her dad about it only probably left out the part about what we were doing. He made her buy a new lid for the toilet at the hardware store and take it down there and appologize! I am sure we learned some lesson from that incidence. So Sharon I know you look at this some maybe you can remember what we were doing and remind me!

08/14/09 09:23 PM #178

Mo Sneller (Standley)

Dru- No, it wasn't you in this story! Though I am sure embarrassed you in other ways.

Susan- I just never knew there was a bar in the bathroom. It puts a different spin on why females have to go in groups!

Becky and I went to the Orphiem one Christmas after high school during an ice storm. We had no power at the house and decided it would be a good idea to go to the movie. The power kept going off and on. We went to the bathroom at one point (no alcohol) and the power went out while we were in there. It was pitch black. We couldn't find our way out. I stepped in a mop bucket and then the lights came back on. It was very funny!

I remember those Friday nights at the Orpheum well! One of the most memorable times was when they showed "Grease" for the first time and there were so many kids that they opened up the balcony. It was filthy, the seats had about six inches of dust that raised in clouds when everyone clapped or stomped their feet, smelled musty, and all but I had a great time.

When I drop off my teen twins at the current movie theater out in BFE, I often think about how different it is from the old Orpheum, mostly good but not for nostalgia!

It has been a while since I've on here but after reading some of the posts about the Orpheum I thought I'd comment... Susan, I don't know about that specific incident with Sharon, but I DO specifically remember mixing lots of Cherry Sloe Gin with our Coke in the bathroom!! I think we used to smoke the Swisher Sweets on Consumer's parking lot! LOL!

Hey if you're not on Facebook you ought to come over and join us. There are quite a few of us on Facebook these days and it's great to stay in touch!

Dana Dru Sims (Jordan)

It has been forever since I've been able to catch up. I wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday to Patricia, Dan, Carla, and Matt. Those are the only December birthdays I can remember for some reason!

Mo, you never embarrassed me! We always had fun together as I recall. I ran into Henry awhile back and you looked great, Henry! I'm not mad at you anymore for breaking my heart way back in the 80's!

Keep the memories flowing, my friends!

12/06/09 06:01 PM #183

Terry Ragland (Miele)

Dru and everyone else, SERIOUSLY come play with us at Facebook!

Happy Holidays to all! I haven't posted before but it has been interesting reading about all the memories that happened long before I got to Neosho. I thought in the two years I was there I had a ton of great memoris but they kind of pale in comparison to some of the revelations I'm reading.

I certainly didn't have enough time to catch up with all of the people I wanted to at the reunion so this is nice.

Dru it was great seeing you too. I wish we would have had more time to catch up. I never knew I broke your heart and I never knew you were mad...I gues I should have known something was up since it's taken you close to 30 years to talk to me again.

Everyone keep posting and take care...maybe we can have another get together before the next reunion.

Dana Dru Sims (Jordan)

Wow Henry, I guess our short term relationship made a long lasting impression on you since you can't remember much! It was great to see you, though, and I won't go another 30 before we communicate again!

Terry, I will make it my New Year's resolution to create a Facebook page. I know I am behind the rest of the world in internet technology!
