Here's a quiz: does anyone know the "predator" (and I'm not talking about Mrs. Youngberg) who taught some of us (not me) in junior high, and was later fired and/or arrested for improper conduct with underage girls?

Clarence, Wiki says Barak was born in Hawaii. I would be happy to sign his birth certificate if I got a free trip. I have always wanted to go there ever since the Brady Bunch got to go. I got Crowder's pool and the Bradys got Hawaii. Life just isn't fair...LOL.

Terry, The answer would be Mr. Butler. I loved his classes and he was one of my favorites! He was a great shop teacher and always put safety first. I was so shocked when that came out. I truly think he was framed.

Didn't they make the guys and girls switch shop with home-ec for a couple of weeks the year after we went through? I guess this is why I can safely use a belt sander but have to call my mom for instructions if I oven bake a potato. (Yes, I can cook one in the microwave.)

Teri, I think that had something to do with a stepdaughter that was probably just pissed off for being disciplined. I don't know that but I think it was her that caused all the trouble.

Hey, ya'll should go visit the old intermediate you would not believe how beautiful it is. Yet, it is still the same. They only changed the decor. Very nice people there.

Yeah Evelyn,
My aunt Lela lived there until last year. It was a trip to know what was there 35 years ago until now. She lived where the girl's locker room was. Very nice now.
Of course I wanted to do the hillbilly thing and say "this place seems so small" but I held back and kept my comments to myself.

Hey Ladies, remember the big fashion show we presented as the climax of Mrs. Schnackenberg's home ec class, where we modeled our own hideous sewing projects? My creation was a faux denim and watermelon print mini-dress with flutter sleeves and I was NOT ASHAMED, although I should have been!

For the entertainment portion of the show, Chrissey sang "Have You Never Been Mellow," accompanied by me on the piano. She actually wanted Shelly to play, because she was a much better pianist. But I owned the sheet music, and used that as leverage.

Oh my gosh! I remember that fashion show! I was mortified! I did such a poor job on my dress that my mother's friend took it apart and re-did it for me...okay, so I cheated...my dress was hideous, and made my chest look six times larger than it already was! I hadn't made the connection about big chests and boys yet (so, I was slow, too,) and I was mortified! LOL!

Hey, It has been fun to read all your memories. Sorry I couldn't make the reunion but I was in Missour the week before. I remember the outfit I made for that fashion show! I didn't realize that Intermediate was now apartments. I haven't been through Neosho for at least 4 years. Sandy, check your personal messages.

You all have way better memories of Intermediate than I do. Something I have tried and tried to erase from my mind! LOL. Mr. Townsend was just frightening. My favorites were Mr. Barnes and Mrs. Gibbons. I remember in 6th grade I broke my finger and she accused me of going to extremes to get out of a test. Made me take it anyway (writing left handed), after trying to grade it for a while she gave up trying to read my writing and gave me a A- just because I tried. What a sweet lady. After Intermediate was converted to apartment my dad said he thought it would be cool to live there. I'm like, uh, hello, Edna Stone never left there. She still roams the halls with ruler in hand. That I'm almost sure of. LOL

So gang, who was the principal of Intermediate after Mrs. Stone? Hint: she taught English while we were there.

Terry Ragland (Miele)

Well, well, well... Ricky Berry. I hope you told your wife what a womanizer you were in the 4th grade!!! LOL I can only guess what Mrs. Sanders thought of all our shenanigans. On the other hand, she graded me as "needs improvement" in almost every area, so maybe it's not such a mystery.

Hello Terry! I'm sure Mrs. Sanders knew exactly the entire situation. After my heart was broken in 3rd grade when Lori Roy moved, thank goodness you, Martha, and Jennifer were there to comfort me! HAHA! At one time I think my plans were to marry all of you. A lot of good and funny memories from back in the day. Hope you're well.

Kim--would it have beem Mrs. Embrey??

07/15/09 05:53 PM #149

Stuart Jones

If it was Mrs. Embrey how could anyone tell the difference from Mrs. Stone? Maybe how they gripped the paddle?

07/15/09 06:02 PM #150

Kim Brown (Fitterling)

Actually, it was Mrs. Bonnie Cox. Here's another question: How do you all submit responses without the edit or delete coming up?

07/15/09 07:46 PM #151

Rick Berry

Mrs. Andris was my second guess but I thought she moved away. Or we forced her out. Stu--no difference between the two. And each time I submit the edit and delete are on there as well. I'm pretty computer stupid sometimes so I don't know why Kim.

Kim and Rick, I think the edit and delete links are always present on your personal posts. It's a courtesy to you in case you'd like to change your post or delete something you may have regrets about submitting.

Does anyone know anything about Mr. Ferguson? Is he still around?

Don't want to bring everyone down, but if you are a praying person, Betsy McCrary is struggling physically with a terminal illness. She could use some encouragement and words of love and support from us, because we were more than a class. We were family. If you can send her a message, she needs it. That's what our class seems to do the very best.
Thanks,
Nita

I too remember that fashion show, I made a blue and white sleeveless checkered shirt and shorts to match and I remember nan crying over her dress. You were my neighbor then. How funny. I guessed it was Mrs. Cox. I had a little brother in there. Thought it was her that scared the pants off the next generation. Prayers are out to Betsy. Thanks all for the fun and not so good memories.

Hello - is anybody there?

I've got a new topic. One of my favorite childhood activities was Friday nights at the Orpheum Theater, just off the square. I always looked forward to hanging out with friends there, goofing around during the movies and trying to avoid the wrath of "Squint", the irritable usher. My life-long love of movies was formed during those years. I remember seeing some good shows there, and some real stinkers, too. One that stands out in my mind was a low budget biker film called "Chrome and Hot Leather". Perfect movie fare for a 10 year old boy! I'm guessing my parents were not paying close attention that week. Or maybe they were but needed a break from the kids.

The quality of the movie wasn't generally that important to us, though. It seems we were more interested in which girl was sitting with which boy, and did they hold hands, or did he get his arm around her. And, just what was going on up in the balcony?

I was saddened when they shut the Orpheum down. It wasn't quite the same going to the multiplex in Joplin.

Hey Stuart.

I remember the Orpheum, too! It was great fun and quite the social scene during Jr. High! You could always count on somebody breaking up and somebody getting together over the weekend!

Stuart,

I loved going to the movies. One that stands out was "Poseidon Adventure". It was scary in its own right but Mitzi Johnson's parents were leaving for a cruise the next day! It was not a good pick! (I think it was Mitzi's.)

Didn't they play "Gone with the Wind" sometime? I remember going with my sisters and not understanding it! I was petrified of the battle scenes!

Of course, I really liked the drive-in, too! The hot dog and the bun act in the intermission film was classic! That was a favorite of our family. We would always bring our own popcorn.

In high-school, we would sneak people into the show in the trunk. The people working the booth must not have cared because there was always so much noise but they never stopped us.

Yeah, Stu. Squint. I would have never remembered without your posting. He was perfect for his job.
I can still smell the musty faded purple wall hangings. I remember the few 1.5 person chairs that were big enough for 2 sixth graders "going steady". Seems like they did close the balcony down because of the shenanigans that went on years before. The urban legend was some high schoolers tossed a fifth grader off one time. I remember seeing Return of a Man Called Horse, Dark Shadows movie, several James Bond movies and madcap comedies such as the Love Bug and What's Up Doc.
Oh, and speaking of things to do, don't forget Goober's miniature golf. So much fun! Squeaking obsticles such as windmills, bowling pins and dogs legs made it a challenge. Of course, you could always drag your putter in the fine gravel from your ball to the hole for a better score. I was always sad to see the last hole when you had to hit it the ball up the hill and it would disappear into their hut.

If I remember right, the seats at the Orpheum were blamed for the lice outbreak that went through the grade schools/middle school during our freshman or sophomore year. Eeeeww.

Mo, I loved the Edgewood Drive-In! (I wasn't supposed to go to drive-ins, of course, but as long as my mom isn't reading this forum, we're good.) I loved the Crest, too, in Joplin at 32nd and Rangeline. I remember watching "Young Frankenstein" during a thunderstorm, through the windshield wipers. At least part of it, anyway. :)

My favorite Saturday-night memory, though, is "Ladies Choice" at the skating rink (just across the road from the drive-in). You got to pick the boy you wanted to skate with, and hold his hand--for as long as the song lasted, anyway. I had a set of those furry pom-poms on my skates--remember those?
