Hey!

I feel like I'm being punished for not coming to the reunion. Great pics, and NO captions????!!!!! ARGGGGH!

Those I do recognize look great though, and I really wish I could have been there. :-(

I also wanted to tell Sandy that I have no recollection whatsoever of any forced marching at Intermediate. I think they only made the communists do that.

Terry, that would explain it. Mrs. Hardy must have blacklisted me, because I marched everywhere! :)

(Random thought) Does anyone remember the history films that depicted an event and at the end would say something like "The only difference is You were there" or something like that? We saw so many of them we would say the line out load as as a class. Did we watch them in Mr. Ambrose's class? I always liked those.

Mo, those history films were actually part of the "You Are There" series that CBS produced in the 1950s. They were re-enactments of moments in history made especially for television. Once the series ended, films of the episodes were made available to schools. I remember seeing some episodes on Saturday or Sunday television in the late 1960s or early 1970s, too.

The episodes were narrated by Walter Cronkite, and it's his voice saying, "...and YOU are there." The idea was that he was "reporting" on the particular moment in history, microphone in hand, as it was happening.

I do think it was Mr. Ambrose who showed those to us. I can still hear the sound of all those big venetian blinds in the classroom flipping closed, and the sound of the film going through the sprockets in the projector. I loved film days. :)

I ran into Mr. Craven yesterday at Best Buy. I see him every now and then. Always very sweet. And I taught with him at Seneca for 4 years. He said he may get on the website and say hi to everyone. Ran into Mr. Paden (8th grade science) today at the paint store. He said to be careful about how many bad things we say about him! I remember him always saying "There's no excuse at West Point". Marty & Marvin Morris were the new kids on the block and they were in my class. They passed around a collection cup one day to try to get enough funds to go to a concert... maybe Ozark Mountain Daredevils? Someone, I think it was one of those two, were giving excuses for something one day and Mr. Paden questioned them... "What?".. and they repeated. He said "What?"... and they finally submitted and said, "No excuse, sir". He ran a tight ship. Do you remember Mrs. Bryan whistling? And the weavils in the chili in the 8th grade?

I remember weevils in the chili!!! That made the news, didn't it?

If you invite any teachers to join our site, please be sure and let me know so that I can add them. Otherwise they will not be able to log onto our website.

Terry - Sorry there are no captions on the pictures. It took me a couple of HOURS just to get that small number of pictures on. I'm not even sure how to add captions, but maybe later I'll figure it out...

Hey Cheryl,

I guess beggars can't be choosers, eh? LOL

I really enjoyed the pics anyway. Thanks. :-)

It was so wonderful seeing all your pictures, made me so homesick! Cheryl I can't believe you remember the boll weevils in the chili, too! I JUST told my summer school kids about it yesterday, and they didn't believe me! :) I had to take them on the internet to show them what they were!
I also remember Mr. Ambrose telling me he was going to make me do push-ups and getting sent to the office for betting him I could do more than he could...I was so scared! I can't believe I did that, I was so shy!
Your sweet faces made me realize what a wonderful class we really did have!

07/02/09 11:08 PM #121

Cheryl England (Mitchell)

Terry, I'll keep adding pics, please ask if there's someone you don't recognize and I'll help you out!

Yes, Nita, I definitely remember those weevils. I remember they said it had something to do with the flour or something??? I didn't even know you put flour in chili! I don't! Ick! Anyway, I ate that chili and lived so guess it didn't hurt. In this day and age parents would probably be suing the school district.

Remember head checks for lice? I remember everyone lining up, I believe it was in high school, and they checked all our heads....

Terry and Nita - I do wish both of you could have been at the reunion!! It was definitely a weekend I'll never forget.

The weevils had gotten into the beans.

I do remember the weevils in the chili too, the school
was apologizing up and down for that!
When I lived in Neosho a few years ago, Ron Paden painted the house, that we have since sold, but he retired from teaching and became a painter. I know there were several teachers who painted houses in their summer break as teachers, Mr. Barnes, Mr. Paden, and I think Mr. Goade did too. Does anyone else ever see
some of our teachers these days? Susan Wohlt was telling me at the reunion that Coach Potter drives a shuttle at the casino in Seneca.

I have always told the story that they were ants, not weevils! Too funny! I had eaten most of mine, too, Cheryl.

Dana Dru Sims (Jordan)

After looking at the pictures from the reunion I want to know...who are you people and what did you do with my classmates?! No seriously, you ladies still look hot and you guys are like fine wine and cheese, you get better with age! Carrie updated me on everyone and also said it was the very best reunion we've had so far, so here's to the committee!

You guys are making me queezy talking about the tainted chili! How and why do you remember that stuff?! Gross! I agree with Terry, Sandy. I don't think I was subjected to marching everywhere in intermediate, but if we were, I probably thought it was just a new dance step from Mrs. Weidman's dance class and went with it. I do remember the horrid lunch room in the bowels of the building. It sometimes appears in my nightmares in slow motion. I can recall walking in "single file" through the narrow, dark hallway down the claustrophobic stairwell as the heat slapped me in the face from the kitchen below. The smells of the suprise meats and veggies wafted into my nostrils and permeated my clothing and hair which remained with all of the us the rest of the day. (The good news was, we all smelled the same.) As I turned the corner into the dungeon, I remember the blinding sunlight sifting through the industrial fans running at low speed on the wall high above. The "wack, wack, wack" sound of the blades made my hair stand on end, because it was at that point we were forbidden to say another word to each other. There was no turning back as we were herded through the lunch line like a bunch of cattle waiting to be slaughtered. And then, there she stood, at the top of the other stairway, with ruler in hand, like a vulture ready to retrieve its prey, was Principal Edna Stone, blocking the only exit. She taunted us, daring one of us to talk so she could drag us up the escape route to the dreaded office, where no one ever came out the same as they were when they went in. Right, Stuart? I get chills to this day thinking about it!!!

Anyway, that's my intermediate memory.

I remember feeling so out of place when I moved to Neosho in the seventh grade...you guys had all known each other forever, and all my friends were still in England. But when I read your stories about Intermediate, I am so thankful I wasn't indelibly imprinted with those memories, as I'm laughing at what you remember.

I always loved Intermediate, even with all of the weirdness! Last time I was home I drove by. It was strange to see it has been converted to apartments.

Mo, I remember the foreign exchange students from Germany! I was just telling my son about the time a bunch of us were sitting in the stands at a track meet (I think it was a track meet) and I turned around and they were giving each other hickeys! I had never seen anything like that! LOL!

Susan, didn't one of those students stay with you?? If so, I'm sure you've got plenty of stories about that!

Evelyn Lane (Cross)

Hey everyone, Sorry I to missed the reunion. I had at least 7 foster children so I was busy. I so remember the foreign exchange student her name was Petra. She wore that turtle neck sweater when the rest of us were wearing tank tops (due to the hickies). Great to see all the pics. Hope to see you next time.

07/08/09 12:24 PM #130

Terry Ragland (Miele)

I remember a foreign exchange student named Sabina who made out with Rick Williams.

Stuart Jones

I don't remember any foreign exchange students but I believe they were here because you all have witnessed to these events. I do have memories of much distraction regarding hickeys during junior high. For a while it seemed any blemish on any neck contained the possibility of a hickey, and there was quite a lot of snickering when students wore high collar shirts or turtle necks to school.

Ther's been lots of comment on Intermediate on the forum and I've got my two cent's worth to toss in. Mo, I can't say I share the love for that fine institution. The transition from Benton to Intermediate was hard for me. I went from grade cards with smiley faces, "satisfactory" and "needs improvement" progress reports, to needing 92% or higher for an A and a much more structured daily school life. And we didn't have recess! There were some nice, helpful teachers there but I didn't seem to have too many of them. Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Hall were bright exceptions, but instead of Mr. Barnes, who I wished I could have had, I was stuck with (I think her name was) Mrs. Smith, who was very grumpy, impatient and unhelpful - just what you want in a teacher! And I always got a sinking feeling heading into Mrs. Embry's class. Talk about cheerless. And Dru's comments about the lunch room are spot on. Lunch time was something to be endured, not enjoyed.

OK, that's enough whining. It could have been much worse. I didn't have to take Mr. Merrill's class :-)

Do you feel weird now that most of us are older than the president of the United States? Yup, Barak is a '79er too. I just Wikied him and he was born Aug. 4, 1961.

Hey Tom What country was Hussein born in? He never came up with a birth certificate

Mo Sneller (Standley)

Stuart, I am sorry you had such a tough time. Even though it was scary going from elementary to Intermediate, I really liked meeting all of the new kids from the other schools and I loved the challenge of making it to class on time when the classes were on different floors (after I got past the fear of getting lost). That was also when I started exchanging notes with others which added another challenge to seeing what you could get away with!

I did have Mr. Merrill in 5th. I was one of the few that liked him though he was stern. 5th grade was when I started going by Mo "publicly" though it had always been a nickname in the family. Mr. Merrill told me he would give me a 0 for every paper I turned in that did not have Monica on it. I tested him once and he gave me a 0. After that, I would put Monica (Mo) on all of them. He let it slide. What is funny is that is what my email signature is at work! My boss does not like "Mo".

Cheryl, Maybe the German students had more than one "hickey" session. I am pretty sure when I saw them it was at a baseball game. Too funny!

Dana, You did a great job of describing lunch time. I had forgotten about the no talking and the fans! That is priceless!

Susan Wohlt (West)

Ok speaking of intermediate, I was stuck with Mrs. Smith also Stuart and I had Mr. Merrill both years! No nice Mr. Pumpkin for me. Also Mrs. Embrey too. Must of been because we came from Benton and they didn't like us!
And as far as the exchange students I had Christina at my house and she was the wildest one of all I believe.
