John R. Willman
65; of Floyds Knobs
— A funeral Mass for John R. Willman, 65, of Floyds Knobs, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary of the Knobs Cemetery. He died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Heath Services.
He retired in 2001 after 34 years as an educator within the New Albany Floyd County School system. Through his career, he touched many lives as an English teacher, Athletic Director, football and wrestling coach. His commitment to education continued as a member of the Indiana State Teacher’s Association, the New Albany Floyd County School Board, President of the New Albany High School Alumni Association, and a Co-Chair of the New Albany High School Hall of Fame. He continued his service to the community as an active member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church. He volunteered as a Eucharistic minister, a regular lector, an annulment counselor, a member of numerous committees, and as the President of the Parish Council. He was a trusted friend and confidante to many, always ready with a smile and wry sense of humor. His commitment to service — community, family and friends — is a gift that was shared with everyone he touched. “Big John,” as his family knew him, took his job as grandpa very seriously. “Camp Willman” was always open to his three grandsons, and nieces and nephews, where they spent long hours fishing, building campfires and tromping through the woods.
Survivors include his wife, Marietta; his son, Rob and his wife, Megan; his daughter, Alys Willman (Daniel Malec); his sister, Jane Willman (Mike Kasse); grandsons, Lucas Willman (11), Trace Willman (9) and Nicolas Willman (5) with another grandchild due this March.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Mary Dixie Willman.
Visitation will be at Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, Market Street Chapel, New Albany, from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday.
The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Harry Shields Fund in care of Hazelwood Middle School or the Building Fund of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church.
