Ok, so I wasn't going to post Duran Duran as a song of the day (it just seemed too obvious of a choice) but I've decided that with all the Duran Duran talk that I would be remiss in not choosing one. So instead of choosing one of their chart topping hits, I'd choose something slightly more obscure. So I give you "Waiting for the Nightboat" from their first album which I bought as an import from an ad in the back of Teen Beat magazine. lol.

(The video is this hilarious mini zombie movie that they made.)

When I was a child, every summer my folks would throw me and my sister in the gold station wagon and we would travel the country. We towed our pop-up camper and made an adventure of it. For those thinking Chevy Chase and the Vacation movies, that was us. This of course was pre-walkman days. So my Pops would make us listen to The Beatles, Elvis, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash. It took me years, but I eventually was glad that I had been forced to listen to such "crappy music" in the car.

This morning I'm driving my daughter to daycare, listening to my "Go Tars" playlist, not paying much attention to what song is on. When all of the sudden, my 6 year old son Joseph is singing WILD BOYS, NEVER CLOSE YOUR EYES! He knows the words to Duran Duran. This is the same kid who sleeps in a Bon Jovi concert t-shirt, and a Beastie Boys t-shirt. Will he thank me one day, or laugh at me? Jenn- do you having any photos of the blue hair? I'd like to show him how cool Duran Duran really is.

Hey Lisa Miller--are you voting for Obama? That's right, I'm introducing politics on the message board. All of you Michigan folks are going ot play a big part in November. Yes We Can! Get out and vote....Obama!

Uh oh Mike, you're venturing into dangerous territory there. There have been people in my office nearly coming to blows over politics lately. Sheesh. I've been following politics very closely my whole life, voted in every single election since I was 18 (local & national) and I've never seen it this bad. People can't even have rational, thoughtful discussions anymore because it's gotten so polarized. I really wish it wasn't that way.

And were you talking about Duran Duran's hair? Because I never had blue hair... though I wish I had. When I dyed my hair black, people FREAKED out. lol. That's awesome that your son likes such a variety of music. To me, that makes for a well-rounded person.

Jenn - Now that video was ART! If any of you haven't seen the "Making fun of Duran Duran (especially Andy)" on YouTube, you should check them out. I think there's four of them. Pretty funny stuff.

Mike - I wondered how long it would take for the politics to start. I think I've decided I'm more Libertarian. Frankly, both candidates scare the crap out of me. I'm a small business owner. Where's my bail out? I'd like a golden parachute, please! :-D
Seriously, though, these two are the best we could come up with? Sad! My cat is even disgusted....

OK I have only two things to say then I will vow never to talk politics on this site.

Here is my question about Obama. When he says that he will not tax the middle class, I wonder what he considers to be "the Middle Class". It seems convenient and easy to say that he only wants to tax the rich. But the problem is that when some hear rich, they think Oprah and Bill Gates. To others rich could mean anyone with some disposable income. Unfortunately tax increases effect everyone, not just the "Rich". Whether it be small businesses, self employed or other tax paying Americans that have worked hard (or got lucky) to get ahead. I worry that what is said to win an election, may not ultimately translate into reality. (didn't Bush Sr. say read my lips)

My second view point (and biggest pet peeve) is when is any politician (R) or (D) going to actually reduce the deficit (or need for more tax funding) by reducing government spending. I know that they all talk about it, but never do anything about it. Does anyone else think that the government wastes out money, or is it just me. I know that for most of us, when times get tight, we cut our spending (unless you can go to your boss and demand a pay raise - good luck) but for some reason it just doesn't seem that government works the same way.

OK - I'm done venting.

Mike,

To answer your question. I don't need to vote for Obama. I live in Chicago so you know the voting motto. "In Chicago, we vote early and often." I think based on the votes that have already been placed, Obama has already won Illinois.

Joe-
Obama is your hometown guy! Are you going Cubbies or Sox? You have to be hoping for an all Chicago series.

Hey everyone....we can skip the politics. I was mostly busting an inside joke on Lisa. Although, it would be nice to pull Michigan in Novemeber!

I'm hoping for an all Chicago series, even though I don't even care about baseball. I just think it would be cool.

I'm really looking forward to the Wings/Hawks Winter Classic outdoor game though.

Come on guys. The Rays down here have made history making it into the playoffs. They need all the fans they can get. Plus, here in Tampa Bay we can pretty much guarantee there will be no threat of snow or ice during the World Series!

Hate to join in the politics conversation - but looks like Obama will have a clear shot here in Michigan. All the news today is that McCain is giving up on good ole' Michigan, reducing his staff, cutting back on advertising here and cancelling visits.

I agree - not really jazzed about either candidate, but my good ole liberal public school employee social working vote goes to Obama.

And come on - you gotta go Cubbies!

Go Sparties this weekend!!!

Being a transplant in Chicago gives me the luxury of not having to root for either team exclusively. But to answer the question, I am rooting for an all Chicago series and a Cubs win, Cubs win, Cubs win. Unfortunately I give it only a 10% chance of actually happening. It will probably be Red Sox Vs. LAD. Just like the NBA (Boston Vs LA) BOOOOOOOO

Hey Joe, you know as well as I that the government has its own personal private bank (FEDERAL RESERVE BANK) that they can borrow from without limits and never have to worry about paying any of it back. If you or I had that kind of bank at our disposal it would be hard for us to not buy whatever the hell we wanted. What a F***ed up system.

I don't think it really matters who you vote for... both candidates are basically the same. They are both bought and paid for by special interests.

Sorry, don't mean to sound so negative. GO BLUE!!!

Diane Barbour

Joe- Come on! Where's the faith in the Chicago teams? Go Cubs!!

Jennifer- I agree with you on the Wings/Blackhawks snowdown! That day it will be Go Wings! all the way!

Joe- Hawks or Wings??

10/02/08 07:20 PM #232

Joseph Ales

Again I root for a Wings/Hawks western conference final then................ A hawks win. Normally it would be Wings but its been a long time for the Hawks.

10/02/08 08:08 PM #233

Say it ain't so Joe... I don't care where I live on this planet, I will always be a hardcore Wings fan.

I haven't lived in the Detroit area in 20 years (except summers during college). I am still loyal to the Wings and the Pistons (when they are good). Otherwise it has been pretty easy to let go.

10/02/08 11:30 PM #235

Michael Thompson

I'm raising my kids to be Detroit/Michigan sports fans. Sorry Spartys, but Joe knows Hail to the Victors.

Thank goodness for the Free Press online. I can keep up with all things Detroit.

I may live in Maryland, but I'll always be loyal to the hometown teams......except maybe the Lions.

Morning kids... in light of the political discussions and per request from Mike T., I have two songs of the day. Today's songs of the day are Depeche Mode's "People are People" off 1984's "Some Great Reward" and Rush's "Closer to the Heart" from their 1981 album "Exit... Stage Left".

I can't understand
What makes a man hate another man
Help me understand

And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart

NO POLITICAL DEBATES... please.... please? please, lets not talk politics on here, i love you all too much to hate you... hahaha...

Sorry ive been mia, i had some business to attend to.

the 88 vs 08 vote looks like a bush/gore florida vote... 50 votes in and its a tight ass race! keep voting.

10/03/08 11:40 AM #238

Jennifer Schwab

Jeff - Lol... except I'm pulling in dead last like Ross Perot. And I do agree, talking about politics might only serve to divide us into separate camps and I would hate to see that happen. We dealt with cliques in school, let's not do that here.

10/03/08 12:27 PM #239

Jeffrey Murphy

yeah, i mean i dont mind a healthy debate about REAL issues and i am sure that that they all effect us differently so we have different takes on them... but i know from my internet experiences that it ALWAYS turns nasty and into name calling... i hate terms like "you people" or "right wing snob, liberal kook", blah, blah, blah.... i get called names enough, on a daily basis and i just dont want to hear that from my classmates.

so with that said, i will not be participating in ANY form of political debate on our class reunion website.

okay... NOMINATE is a failure, as it appears that we have not a single classmate in need of a ticket.... so i will be thinking up a new contest.... and suggestions are welcome!

10/03/08 02:11 PM #240

Michael Thompson

Murph-
I don't need a ticket, but if you wanted to fly to Baltimore and pick John and I up, I'll bring some beers.....for after you land the plane. Let me know if the plane is free that weekend.

10/03/08 02:20 PM #241

Hey if Jeff's picking everyone up via plane I'd like to request a pick up! :)
