College, graduate school, career in teaching and research (political science, international affairs, military policy). 14 years in Washington at the Brookings Institution, brief leaves for public service (staffs of Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, National Security Council, Mondale presidential campaign). At Columbia since 1990 teaching about world politics and national security policy, writing books and articles, with occasional consulting for Central Intelligence Agency, State Department, Defense Department. Late start on family, but Adela was worth the wait and our kids are (as everyone's are to them) the best. Oldest daughter doing well in educational administration in San Francisco, middle son has a lifetime struggle with Down Syndrome but is holding his own, youngest son just out of college, looking for work. I've been very lucky, have no complaints, and no serious regrets. Have not spent time in Newton since parents died in 1971, but it was a good place to grow up, and we were pretty lucky to get a start from Newton High.
