I am so excited to see all my music friends - especially the choir geeks - from our high school days. Here's a 50-year catch up -
With a master's in music ed, I taught vocal music K-8 for many years with the goal of becoming a high school choral director. I was married seven years and pregnant with our first child when I realized that everything I am is a cantor, which in Judaism is a fully ordained clergy person, and like the minister of music in the church is responsible for the musical life of the synagogue. After serving as cantor for 30 years, a group of congregants convinced me in 2003 to become their sole clergy for a new congregation and next year will be our "Bar Mitzvah Year."
I met my husband of 44 years singing in the choir at Temple University when I was a freshman and he was in his second year of medical school. Six years later he proposed backstage after we sang in a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana with the Pennsylvania Ballet - so that is "our song!"
We were blessed with 4 sons and 2 granddaughers. Judah (37), married 4 years with an 18-month-old daughter, is a professor of special ed and behavioral psychology at Simmons College. Noah (34), married 2 years with a 6-month-old daughter, is a jazz drummer turned nurse in pediatric oncology. Gabe (31) is in music production and management. He was treated for leukemia during his junior and senior years in high school and Noah took a year off from college so he would never be alone duting treatment. It was this experience which gave him the impetus to become a nurse. Dan (28) is a sound engineer for live theatre. He worked at the Berkshere Theatre Festival, Huntington Theatre Co, Theatre by the See in RI, and Northshore Music Theatre. After 7 months as the "sound guy" on a Royal Carribbean Cruise ship, he moved to San Franciso and is currently sound engineer for the California Shakespeare Co.
Phew! A lot hppens in 50 years! Can't wait for Saturday!!
