First, I want to thank Jon McIntosh for organizing all of this. Very well done!
A lot of strange things have happened in the last 30 years. After high school I served in the Army for 11 years, (4 years on the east coast and 7 overseas.) While I was back in the states in the summer of 1987 for some training at Fort Knox, KY, I met and eloped with a girl from Louisville. (Dean and Rita were just a bit shocked.)
In 1990 I left the Army to make a start in the “profitable” world of real estate. (It looked soooooo easy on the late night television commercials.) Of course the market then crashed (hard) in 1991. “Things” did not go well, and it wasn’t long before I lost my house, my car, and my marriage.
I remarried in 2002 to a wonderful woman from Orlando, Florida. Lynna is the delight of my life and has two children of her own. Nicole is a sophomore at Berry College in North Georgia. Marc is a junior in high school, and my son, Lukas, is a freshman. I now work for a small real estate investment company in Atlanta. I almost never get back to Nebraska because my parents and two of my sisters live on the west coast. We reunite out there.
Through the years I have stayed in contact with both Mike Mapes and Scott Whitmore. Mike would hunt me down from time to time. Scott was flying jets for the Air Force and “participating” in nearly every oversea conflict, so every our paths crossed occasionally. Colonel Whitmore has never grown up. He is still the same “damn the torpedos,” irreverent, smart-ass from high school. We each have the two matching red light covers from the top of the Norfolk water tower. I know that Scott is not coming to the reunion because his oldest son, Lieutenant Scott Whitmore,Jr.,USAF is graduating from the fighter pilot school this July in San Antonio, Texas.
