RILEY BYRD OBITUARY

Edward Riley Byrd, August 2, 1950 to August 10, 2010, resident of Redwood City. Per aspera ad astra. Riley lost his long and courageous battle with metastatic prostate cancer on August 10, 2010. He was first diagnosed in 2002. He died peacefully at home. With him when he left this earth were his beloved wife Karen and good friends Jerlaine and Keith Ewing. Edward Riley Byrd, Jr., was born August 2, 1950 in Ft. Lawton, WA to Josephine and Edward R. Byrd. His parents preceded him in death. Riley enjoyed his 33 years of service with Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratory in Palo Alto. There, as a Corporate Fellow and Principle Scientist, Dr. Byrd fostered innovation and led specialized teams of engineers and scientists to develop products and services used by the men and women of our nation's defense. The outcomes derived and the service rendered by Dr. Byrd contributed significantly to our National Security. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvey Mudd College and went on to the University of Washington to receive his PhD in Organic Chemistry. Following a brief internship with Lockheed Marine Systems in San Diego, Dr. Byrd joined the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory (LPARL) in 1977 where his impact and presence became immediate and significant. The consummate professional, Riley shared his intellect and humor freely, engaging the entire staff with honesty and respect. Throughout his tenure, his indomitable spirit was infectious, encouraging those around him to produce greater achievements in their work and personal lives. Those fortunate enough to work with and know Riley are far better off for it. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched. He will be remembered by his willingness to help and his wonderful smile. Always upbeat and optimistic, Riley never gave in to defeat or negativity despite the prognosis of his cancer. Though he had much difficulty these last few months, he was determined to take a cruise to Alaska with his wife, and in June 2010 they did. They would have celebrated 21 years of marriage on August 12, 2010. Riley is survived by his beloved wife Karen, his daughter Toscha and son-in-law Rory Allison, and his grandsons Noa Allison (age 5) and Zeke Allison (age 3). He is also survived by his sister Bea Hunstiger. Although Riley achieved many honors and satisfactions throughout his career, his greatest sense of pride came from his family. An integral part of that pride and satisfaction came from being part of Toscha's life as she became the wonderful person and mother she is with a family of her own. But truly the two shining stars in his life were Noa and Zeke. His family wishes to thank the Kaiser Redwood City Hospice program for their dedicated care these past months, particularly Shirlee whose cheerful outlook brightened his day.
